startup programs

hey folks
tring to remeber how to disable some programs at startup.
do you not go into safemode?
after that i'm lost.

Usually done thru msconfig.

Run>type msconfig>enter>startup tab. Untick programs that you do not want to run at start up.

should I disable nwiz.exe?, ctfmon?

nwiz is nvidia drivers i believe, prolly dont want to disable that one. the other one i dont know, somebody else know? and if im wrong ont the nwiz.exe, then tell me, thnx

what about using a tool
like Easy Cleaner from Toni Arts?
would that be more user friendly?
or is that not accurate?

Here's my deal.

I have a cpu usage rate of 50% all the time with nothing running.
Have run Housecall, SnD found nothing Mcafee 7 running as well.
Hijackthis results.

All help is welcome.

You're not supposed to post a hijackthis log file at all until asked to (and then it will be as an attachment) because there are many other steps to take first:

If you think you have spyware, etc. you have to read that thread and do the steps that it says to do. HijackThis is a last resort (I've been told that so I'm passing my knowledge on to you).

 

not intended to be a dumb noob question, but rather a student learning new things, what is hijackthis? ive heard about it all the time and still dont exactly know what its used for. thnx

 

so you would only use it to "see" what is going on? not to fix anything. so why are you sayin i shouldn't use it? is it illegal or somethin.

 

HiJackThis is a tool for very advanced users. As MA said, if you have to ask, you should not be using it. This is a tool that if used improperly can do irrepairable damage!!!

If you have SPYBOT installed (if not download it its free and available this site) click on tools bottomleft side then click on startup. There you will see a reasonably good description of what is starting up and you can make a decision as to whether you need it on not.
