    Hello
I Googled, How to disable startup items, and found this = EHow.com
It says to use the system configuration utiity >msconfig, >startup and tic 'to disable all items except a/v'.
I read here that would not be advisable.
I find it easy to check each entry with Google and if it is ok, I disable it.
Is it ok to use just the starup if each entry is approved or do you recommend another way.
Some recommendations don't show much of startup items.
I read here about Windows Dfender and ccleaner. Also there was a staup program that resides in programs which cannot be removed.
I can't seem to find a program that will give as good a view as the configuration utility> startup.
Can anyone think of a way to reduce the startup items safely?
    Thank you

I use ccleaner (found at this link) http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html
Download it-double click it to open it- click tools-click startup then it has a list of what starts up when the computer starts up. Now don't disable something you don't know what it is! Because it can be important so make sure you know its not important. Next heres another link http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=149804 This wasn't made by me I just linked you to it.

    Hi Peter

DO not use msconfig as you will gain 1 startup back as msconfig adds its own and if you ever remove an application thats startup is disabled it will become orphaned in msconfig and is not easy to remove, its just awkward but not impossible, and as msconfig is a troubleshooting app and always was its not a route to take to give yourself any grief later down the line.

The skinny from the above from the horses mouth HERE

Windows Defender is good and also as linked too StartupCPL is the best option IMHO, but I'm always of the opinion if disabling then delete as you dont need it anyways, but disable for a week and see if it causes issues, if not delete, but also remember if you update an app whos startup you disable (eg, Adobe, Apple, Sun Java to name a few) then you will have to re-disable.delete them as they are added back.

MSCONFIG is mean as a diagnostic tool, (despite its name as the configuration utility).

You can use it to temporarily disable things, including startup stuff, to see how it pans out.

Once you have made a list of that which you want to disable, go back to MSCONFIG and renable them. Then find another way to disable them at boot.

The best behaved programmes all include an option or preference setting to

'start when windows starts' or similar.

The best way to disable anything is to uncheck this option. All the necessary tidying in Windows will then be done for you.

Some programs start at boot by placing a shortcut in the start menu. Simply open the start menu and delete these shortcuts (rightclick>delete).

Finally goback to MSCONFIG and list any remaining progs you want to disable, but do not do so in MSCOBFIG.

If any remain comeback to this thread and we can sort them out.

Since you are a senior member you're probably familiar by now with Hijack This. I typically research any unknown or suspicious startup items, then let Hijack This do the desired removal. I concur too with the advice of the others who posted. There are numerous applications offered here in MG to help manage startup items on your pc.

    >I like this conservative option.

I was amazed at the concurrence of sites that recommend using mscofig to disable startup items - they are probably doing much harm to well intentioned users trying to maintain their pcs.

Thank you all for your help.

    Hi Peter

Sadly many dont really know what msconfig is really about, yes it "can" manage startups but was never designed to this task, so those that say it is, really dont understand its usage, as the link I posted from the maker say exactly that.

Issues mainly arise due to uninstalling apps that where managed via msconfig and then are stuck in its listing, not a major thing but just not needed.

I will always maintain my preference in that if you are to manage a statup then you dont need it anyway so delete it, dont manage it.

Strangely enough I was looking at a commercial repair disk today and the makers talked of the

    'startup configuration utility'

If those who ought to know better can't get it correct what chance the rest?

the correct name is, of course

    ' (microsoft) system configuration utility'

Actually, the difference in time between normal startup and selective startup, with some items disabled, amounts to a couple of sneezes.
The startup manager with Ccleaner seems to show most items; I would use that if i were to disable any and the agin only after being sure they are ok.
