There is a site (which I don't suppose I'll mention specifically) that touts "64 Maximum Bit Length", "Hardware DEP", & "Hardware Visualization" as being the "three most significant security features" to have on a (new) PC/processor (or a MAC for that matter I suppose - if there is a difference (?) - or can a MAC be desceirbed as a "PC" as well?? In any event ...) ...

~*QUESTION*~ Is the assertion above True/accurate (?) - and, do "ALL" NEW computers sold come with this protection? I'm supposing this in reference to "internet security" and "hack avoidance"?

    Thanks,

i wouldn't say so... DEP for a start is just a pain in the arse flouted about but with very little impact for the end user on any system.

The only things in reference to internet security & anti hacking are pretty much software based (unless you have a dedicated hardware firewall or somesuch.
But in the case of an end user on a home network or plugging straight into the internet through a modem router, the only real things that are relevent are perhaps closing off port ranges on your modem that you dont use & setting up a firewall (generally on your modem & PC)
    and of course anti-virus protection.
i think that this site youre talking about is just marketing something that is of no real relevance to the end user

    Wow, the confusion continues.

SO ... Is there ANYTHING, in particular, that I might/should look for in the purchase of a new PC, that would be considered "state of the art" ... or, "cutting edge", as far as "SECURITY" is concerned? "Security" (online/internet/web), to me, is #1 - ahead of speed/performance - as far as I'm concerned. If I have a stout/robust software firewall, can I (or should I) also have one elsewhere (I suppose this can be configured/made to be in a "router"??). How far can I go to keep these internet criminal maggots out of my PC (aside from calling for laws (rather - "demanding", a la The Old Testament) that would start removing (uh, yeah - in a perfectly violent-like manner) the fingers of these worthless FUC*S - such as one finger for 1st offense, then a thumb (from the opposite hand), then an entire hand for a 3rd offense should the perp be so bold (and stupid)??

Thanks - and have a great day!
