Hi, wonder if you could help. We have just installed a mail server and are using a static ip to connect to internet/receive & send mail etc.

For some reason, the ip stops responding for a period and will then restart. Is there any reason for this?

Doing a ping /t test show it responding then maybe dropping out from anywhere between 4 and 20 hops and will then suddenyl start working again.

is there anywhere on the server i can set to keep the address alive?

    Completely baffled! It's a Windows 2008 server

    Thanks in advance
    Chris

did you reserve that address in your dhcp pool? one thing i do i create a vlan for my servers with its own dhcp pool.

i haven't tried the DCHP POOL. Looking at it and trying a few different setups it seems it's the machine at fault, some setting somewhere, i've tried a different static on this machine and it does the same thing but that same static sits on another machine with no problems.

    Any ideas?

Are you not using dhcp for other devices on your network? if two machines have the same IP, youre going to have problems. Chances are that is what happening if youre assigning static ips within range of possible dhcp assignment.
