static ip question

    do i need to contact my provider to enable my computer with a static ip address? dumb question, i know, but i've tried to do it myself using the tutorials and protocols i've found on different sites, with no luck. thanks.

    For a public static ip yes must be done through your provider, for a private one, no.

    Whether you get a Dynamic Exterenal (Internet IP), or static is up to the type of the Internet connection contarct that you have, it is not a configuration that you can decide own.

    In most cases the entry level contracts are Dynamic.

    Most ISPs charge more if you want a Static IP.
