My problem is very similar to http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=197735, however I see no response to that post.

Here is what is happening to me; I receive the following message on start up.

    -----------------
    The system is shutting down.
Please save all work in progress and log off.Any unsaved changes will be lost.
This shut down was initiated by NT\AUTHORIYSYSTEM Time before shut down(then a countdown starts at 1:00)
Message The system process 'C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\services.exe' terminated unexpectedly with status code -1073741482.The system will now shut down.)
    ------------------

The countdown begins and when it reaches 0 the system freezes and my only option is a hard shutdown. Start up sometimes works but most of the time (always when using restart) the problem reoccurs.

Start > Run > type 'shutdown -a' (without the ' ') and hit Enter.

Then scan for virusses and malware - follow the Malware Removal guide carefully.

Thank you for your quick reply. I carefully followed the instructions. The primary symptom appears to be gone. Hurray! There are still some odd experiences to note and input on the logs provided would be appreciated.

    What problems still exist

    - Windows Update appears to successfully install "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - Sep 2009 KB 890830" however upon reboot the same update appears to be required again and again.

    - SAS and MAM are unable to launch, displaying error about appropriate permissions decribed below.

What happened during XP Cleaning Procedure

    - Upon completion of SAS running and subsequent reboot, I was unable to relaunch SAS to obtain a log. I receive the error, "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access at this time." Note that SAS did find and remove a Trojan. I didn't note the name because I expected it to be in the log, which is not attainable.

    - I proceeded to Malwarebytes Anti-Malware which ran successfully. Upon reboot, that program also then would not relaunch. I received the same error. "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access at this time."

    - Subsequent steps in the cleaning procedure had no problem. I am attaching logs from Combofix, RootRepeal, and MGTools.

Thank you so much for your assistance. :)

Ok mudwheeler, good to see you've made progress with this :)

I suggest you now create a new thread in the Malware removal section, linking back to this thread and allow the experts to sort out any remaining malware problems. Probably best to attach your logs again there.

Be patient - they use a strict rota over there - bumping topics is frowned upon.

Go back to reading the Malware Removal guide again to ensure that everything was done as suggested there, it's easy to miss out something first time round.

    Good luck :)
