I'm new to systems administration and I've been at the company i'm at now for about 6 months. We have about 100 Windows servers and 40 workstations. I'm the one who manages everything besides my manager. Management has started asking us to fill out timesheets daily to track time. Our systems\network runs fairly smooth so not a lot of troubleshooting or problems during the day to work on. I wanted to find out what what some of the other systems\network admins out there do daily, weekly, monthly to see if I could get some ideas of things that can be done. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Are you not salary???? If not...are required to be on the premesis for a set amount of time, no matter if there are probs to fix or not!?!?! If you have to be there from say...9-5...then I would think they are obligated to pay you for your time whether you have "work" to do or not!!!! Unless you are salary...then you get the same amount every week no matter what you do or donh't do!!

I am not a system administrator, but I would think that theory would apply to any kind of job that anybody might have!!!! Otherwise...if they aren't going to pay me to be there...then I'm going home!! :) ;)

Or are you asking for ideas on project to do in order to occupy your time?? If so...I wouldn't know, and I apologize for sticking my nose where it doesn't belong, and disregard the statements above!!!!

Gump, do you have a job description? What does it say your primary areas of responsibility are, and are you fulfilling them? As a manager a good portion of your time would be designated as supervision/line management. How many do you supervise? Are there guidelines as to how often supervision takes place and regular (6 monthly?) assessments? If not, instigate them. What do you see not taking place in your work place that maybe you think should be? Maybe there are some innovative projects you could begin? Just some thoughts :)

Other than elected officials, name me one job where you'd still get paid your salary for NOT doing your job ;)

I'm on salary. Depending on how close a launch is, my 44-hour work week could hit 65 hours easy; doesn't bother me one bit when you love what you do. :)

The really important question is; do you have a water cooler to hang out at?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Yes I also handle all of the things you mentioned except any programming, we have programmers that handle anything in that space. All of our hardware\software is pretty new and up to date so things usually run pretty smooth. Our network consists of all Win 2k3 servers, win xp for workstations, exchange for email, patches and updates require some time to keep up with but sooner or later you've tested\applied all of those.

I meant that if they pay you to come to work and you have to stay for "X" amount of hours, and they don't give you enough work to keep you busy for that "X" amount of hours...that is there own stupid fault...they still have to pay you if they want you to stay till 5:00 or whatever time it is you go home!!

And believe it or not...I once had a job as a warehouse manager, and the boss actually told me that there might be slow times when all there is to do is read the paper and wait for the next order to come in!! But somebody had to be there from 8-5 no matter what...and that was me!! Needless to say...I was well versed in the news of the world at the time!!!! :)
