I have an old 16mb nVidia TNT I have been using at 1600x1200 resolution on Win98. I am trying to get it to work at that resolution on Windows XP, but it won't go higher than 1024x768. I have downloaded new drivers, but that did not do it. Is it possible to make this old video card work at higher resolution with Windows XP? I worked great with Win98.

It is probably time to retire that old card. Shop for a new video card at Newegg.com. They have some of the lowest prices for nVidia and ATI graphics cards....Good Luck.

Ah, yes, retiring the old card and buying a new one is one obvious solution. However, if the card works at 1600x1200 on a Win98SE box with 512MB, then it would be a waste to just toss it aside. Win98 is still a viable solution for the user I am working with as they are not demanding except for their desire to fully utilize their 21 inch monitor. The card may also work just fine under Linux at higher resolution as well so throwing it out is not the preferred option. Does anyone know if there is any way to get this old card to work with XP Pro at 1600x1200?

Not recommended, but mayhap it will work:

First question. Does windows xp know what monitor you have? Does it list the actual type of monitor.

Sometime, getting drivers for the actual monitor, will fix these type of issues. These so called drivers only tell windows that YES, I CAN DISPLAY THIS AT HIGH RESOLUTIONS. Then the driver picks up a hammer and starts beating windows into submission. Anway, this may or may not work. Just a thought. Yes, I have ran into this situation before. :)

Thanks! XP just sees it as a Plug and Play Monitor. Driver details says no drivers are installed. It is a Proview monitor and their web site says they don't need special drivers to work with XP, but they don't define what "work" means. I found some Win2K drivers for a monitor that was "close enough" so I tried to cram it down XP's throat and at least I made some headway. That gave me 1152x864 and 1280x1024 which is better than 1024x768. It only runs at 60 Hertz though and the Win98 would run 1600x1200 at 75 Hertz. Maybe I can eventually find a better driver set for the Proview that will get me to 1600x1200. Thanks again for your help.

Just a quickie ( as always) but I know that the latest set of nVidia drivers are no longer supporting the old TNT chipset. Just wondering if you have updated your drivers and that's why you're having a problem. May be worth trying some older drivers but remember to uninstall the one you're using now : )
