Are you on the exact same computer and operating system as the last time you played this game? What are they?

You mentioned "old forums", but not which ones, so I'm not sure what you've done yet. The error you're getting has to do with DirectX 8 and the game not being able to find and use the files it's looking for... which is a bad thing.

You said you have a new computer. Have you verified that you have the latest driver for your video card and that it installed properly? If not, go to the card manufacturer's website nad get the latest driver and install it. Nvidia here, ATI here.

After you've done that, try this:

First completely uninstall DirectX 8. Then go grab the latest DirectX 9 here and install it.

Install the game from the CD, only the game. If there's anything else on the CD, be it DirectX versions, demos, whatever else, do not install them. To avoid conflicts, you might want to temporarily disable firewall and antivirus during the install.

Get the latest patch here and install it, still with the AV and firewall disabled. Once the patch is installed re-enable the firewall and antivirus!

When the above is done, right-click the shortcut to the game and go to the Compatibility tab. Set it to Windows 2000 (if that doesn't work, try one of the other "older" versions), and Apply and click OK.

Let me know if you've tried that yet, and if you haven't, try it and let me know if it works or not. :)

If you already have 9 fully installed don't worry about uninstalling the older versions. Simply make sure that 9 is up to date, and that should be enough. :)

i think i officaly "screwed" my self i read sevral sites about how to uninstall directX and one of the methods was to go to regedit and delete the direct X folder and than reboot the computer than the windows should have reinstalled.. that did not work so i went to downlaod the lastest direct X version but when i install it i recive the following:
    "An internal system error occurred
Please refer to DXError.log and DirectX.log in your windows folder to determine problem."

    heres the DXError.log info:
    "--------------------

Error: (183) - ‏‏אין אפשרות ליצור קובץ כאשר אותו קובץ קיים כבר.(there is no option to create file that is already exists)"

the error massages are in hebrow so i translated them...

the Direct X.log is kinda to long to copy here...

Ouch... the registry can be a messy place. :(

Can you reinstall DirectX 8? Try for that first and see if that takes case of it. If not, you're going to at least need to restore the registry from the back-up you hopefully made of it before you made your changes.

If you have a recent restore point from before you made the change you can get things back to the way they were that way as well.

In that case, after restoring, leave DirectX8 alone and just update 9, and then try those steps again. They're from the game's official support forums, a lot of people posting there have been able to play the game after doing that fix. :)
