Well, I don't know much about this, but here goes. Lets say my friends have a bad computer, with little disk space and not much ram. They can't run Source engine games, and games on the Half Life 1 engine don't run well, either. I totalled up most of what they would they would need to make their computer be able to run Source games, and I said they would need :
A new hard drive (External, or internal)
    about 3-4 GB of RAM
    and a new Graphics card.
A question now pops up. Would they need a new Graphics card if they updated their video drivers?

    Hello There,

If they need a graphics card it will come with a installation disk anyway which will have the updated video drivers. Which graphics card you need depends on what type of games are you running, I would strongly recommend getting a ATI graphics card as they are quite good at coping with games especially half life 1.

    Hope this helps

    Nvidia cards are also good.

But, my question still remains. Would they need to buy a new graphics card if they would update their drivers? I know a new graphics card would update them, but they wouldn't need a new graphics card if they only have to update their drivers.

    What card are they using?

It depends on the current graphics card they have, they might not be any updates or anything so they might have to go out and get a new card with the latest update drivers.

How old is the computer? Current OS? Speed? RAM? Is there a graphics card now or is it an onboard chip?
Problems you could face because you can't add parts and expect it to work
    a) older motherboards do not recognize the size of hard drives being sold currently
    b) some RAM for older systems is very expensive (I just looked for RAM for a Dell and unfortunately it uses RAMBUS memory which cost $260 for 1 GB)
    c) older motherboards have a limit to the amount of RAM that can be installed; I've recently updated two that would only accept up to 1GB of RAM.
    d) you might not have a slot for a better video card with adequate memory to run the games you want (PCI, AGP and PCI-e are graphics slots) Perhaps there is only a PCI slot so you are limited to the card that will work.
    d) adding a video card might increase the heat and demand more power so you might have to buy a more powerful power supply and get another fan

Without knowing anything about the computer, it is next to impossible to say whether it would be cost effective to try and fix it.
