This not being able to read my d drive after fresh xp install on c is driveing me nuts.Tryed bootit ng partition find and mount.still no joy. What causes this seems a common enough problem,is it that a fresh install dos.nt set up boot table the same as origonal or what. If the second drive had been disconnected before fresh installation would this have overcome the situation.

    Hi

Is your D drive after a re-install of XP able to be seen in My Computer? but then comes up with an error message that the data cannot be accessed or similar, if you can see the D drive and you get an error do post the error in full?

One possible fix if you can see the D drive but on clicking it cannot be opened is this to take ownership of the files and folders http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

Thanks for the reply goldenskull nothing was changed in the way of jumpers cables etc.but as I say I think I should have disconected the d drive although no one has confirmed that this would have prevented the problem. Two things i think i will try is 1 put he drive in a caddy see if that makes a differance 2 try and set up a partition on the drive and install xp on that drive thoughts anyone

Try TestDisk. I will include some links (already made this up for someone else). It may be useful to you.

I don't think you want to set up a partition on that drive for XP because you will lose the data that you are trying to save.

AustrAlien's suggestion of TestDisk is where I would go since you already tried Find and Mount which a regular poster, Dlb, swears by and he has tried just about every software out there.

I've had luck with TestDisk but it was long enough ago that I can't remember any specifics. I believe it just quickly scans the disk and gives you a list of possible partitions. If one looks the correct size you just tell it to restore. If none are available or the sizes don't look right than you have more complicated options. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step You can get it as a Windows executable and run it as Administrator since you are working on a slave drive not the XP drive. REMEMBER, you don't have to commit to any changes. If you are unsure about the information it gives you post back and we'll try to help you sort it out. It looks like if you get as far as Quick Search for Partitions you will have the option of pressing "P" to see what files are available. If it lists the files you think are on the missing partition then you can go ahead and let it save the changes otherwise just (Q) to Quit.

***For what it is worth I don't think having the second HD connected made any difference. A new XP installation can alter drive letters but doesn't usually make a drive unreadable.

I think i,ve made matters worse when I used partion find and mount I think I must have inadvertantly set up a partition. As I downloaded big drive enabler and it shows the drive as having 4 partitions 1 33gb and the other three empty. I,am probably screwed unless I take the drive from the case to find out how many heads cylinders etc if it,s written on it and try and set it up manually as it looks like this may be an option in this big drive inabler software. Cant remember the exact size of the drive but I know it exceeded 120gb

I don't want to keep throwing software titles at you since it gets confusing. But Partition Wizard as a bootable CD might let you see your partitions from outside Windows. You could check how it reads the drive and whether or not it sees files. It has an Explore Partition option that should let you see if there is anything left of your original files.

TestDisk is probably the better choice for rewriting the partition table but Partition Wizard will give you some information in a easier to understand format. REMEMBER you can always exit the program without making any changes to your Hard Drive.

Thanks for your help guys I think its the end nof the road. The drive is 250gb and I think my motherboard is,nt up to it as well as the other problems I had. mbd is abit kt7 with 1000m cpu. Reminds me now when I got the drive I could only get to see just over 100gb that was after installing kroll big drive enabler which dos,nt seem to have installed itself that well this time. I think its about time I invested in a new mbd. The local computer fair closed down a couple of years ago so I,ve lost touch I will have to browes the hardware forum to see if I can pick up some tips thanks agian
