    Hi guys,
I have a machine that was given to me (P3 700 mhz I think...MSI 6309 mobo) that had all sorts of info on it that I didn't want. I decided to format it and use the recovery disk that came with it, which has 98 SE on it. I tried that and the 98 setup completes, but when it got to Windows to finish installing the hardware, it crashed and restarted. No errors or blue screens or anything.
I really didn't want 98 on it anyway, so I decided to try to put 2000 on it. Yeah I'm a huge 2000 fan! It formatted the harddrive and installed the setup files, but when it goes to boot into Windows for the first time to finish installing Windows, it crashes. It gives me the Stop error 0x000000D1 with the file ntoskrnl.exe
Since I know a lot about computers, I figured it had to be hardware related. I pulled out all of the expansion cards and switch the video card to a completely different brand. I even have a PCI video card in it now, thinking something couold have been wrong with the AGP. I tried new memory in it and still nothing. I tried to install Windows with the 2 cd drives that are in the computer and still the same thing. I pulled out the cd drive from my good computer and even tried that with no luck. I know the CD is good too and I also tried putting XP on it with the same results.
I figured it had to be the BIOS then. I went to MSI's site and got an updated BIOS and installed it. STILL no luck.
Now I'm like almost pissed at it now, so I EVEN tried a different harddrive and of course, it didn't help.
I have a PSU tester and it tested good. I tried all new data cables with no success.
What can I try next? Is it shot? ANY advise is good, because I'm stumped.

    Thanks in advance!

I forgot to mention a few other things. I did some research and found that APM might be a problem, so I disable that within the BIOS. I tried a 866 mhz CPU in it and I had worse problems. It will just lock up, it won't even reboot itself.

    Any ideas?

The thing I don't understand is why it worked flawlessly until I formatted it?

your computer has been working properly with win2000 now or other OS.

When I got the computer, it had 98 SE on it. I tried using the recovery cd, but it didn't work. I tried 2000 on it and got the same result and then tried XP with no luck at all. I wanted to see if I could get anything on it at all. It really didn't matter what.

    it's not a laptop. it's a custom built machine.
