Stop Annoying Windows Explorer Popups

In Windows explorer when I hover my mouse over a video or image file a popup opens which either begins playing the video or shows the image. My default apps for those file types are not used and I've looked in my default app settings, registry and file options but nothing helps. It's really annoying especially when I'm trying to delete a file and Windows refuses because it's playing or showing the file. The solution is of course move the mouse but I'd rather suppress that behavior.

I thinks this was something introduced with an update and it's not FileMenu tools. I've also tried disabling PowerToys. Nothing helps. I'm running Windows 10 pro version 20H2, build 19042.

    Any ideas?

Thinking out loud here ... You might consider trying out a different file manager:

Classic Shell - I use this on my Win10 computer (that I use 99% of the time) and find that it's easier to work with and has more (a lot more) options than Windows Explorer. With this one I can have a column that shows file extensions. Can't do that (at least I haven't found out a way to do it) using Windows Explorer.

Open Shell - This replaces Classic Shell 'cause Classic Shell is no longer supported. I put it on my other, lesser-used Win10 computer (that I use 0.05% of the time). It offers pretty much the same options as Classic Shell.

Explorer++ version 1.3.5 - Haven't used this more than a few minutes. Has many options including the ability to have two panels, each one showing a different folder or drive. I'll have to look into this a bit more, a bit later.

FreeCommander XE-32 - I installed this on my Win Vista computer. Seems to be the best one, better than Classic Shell but I haven't spent much time fooling around with it yet.

These are all free file managers BTW.

Thanks. I've tried these and others but I keep going back to explorer. It just seems to work better (apart from the annoying popups).

It isn't either Explorer or an update, it's an app on your system. If you keep Task Manager and Explorer open you should be able to identify the app when you hover.

@the skeezix - Explorer View > Options > View and uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.

Hide extensions for known file types is not checked.
    I appreciate your comment.
I was writing about the columns that appear in the right-hand window when a file explorer is opened. When right-clicking in that window's header, Win 10 has no option to show the File Extension column while other file managers do. At least I can't find the option...

You can enable the file extension column per explorer pane. Right click in the column headers and select More... -> File Extension
