Good day, I have a Gateway MX3562 Notebook w/ XP loaded. This was brought to me to fix as my brother could not get XP to load.

When I received it I started it, XP Black loading screen started and then timed out with the STOP BLUE SCREEN Error..

STOP COOOO139 Enter point not found Setuindowtext could not be loaded in the dinaomic Link Library user32.dll

At that time I I restated by F8 safemode, would boot to safemode then time out before anything loaded on desktop by once more the "Blue Screen Errors" after many attempts to rebot in both XP normally and F8 safe mode, I had 0 success..

I then booted to the Gateway Recovery CD and attempted to repair. when trying to copy files from Disk it timed out bluescreen error "not_equal_or_less" Also, note when trying to copy files from recovery disk there was MANY files that failed to copy with error " Failed To Copy Extracting Process".. I assumed this was a disc problem. I bought a Brand New Sealed recovery disc and the same errors.

At this time I bought a XP Pro ver of Windows. I deleted the current drive at time of installing and attempted to load XP Pro. It would 100% Format then go to copy file process and would not copy MANY files. I had the option told retry and or skip the file. I did both many times and end result was always a BLUE SCREEN error..

I was reaching, thinking (maybe) the WIN XP Pro disc was corrup so I bought a WIN XP Home disk. SAME PROBLEM!.. some of the files it tries to copy and fails to is...

    d3d8.dll
    georiaz.ttf
    mshtml.dll
    AcGenral.dll
    autoconv.exe
    c_932.nls
    cdosys.dll
    class_ss.dll
    comres.dll
    cyzcoins.chm
    d3dim.dll
    d3dim700.dll
    danim.dll
    dbgeng.dll
    dfrgui.dll
    diskcopy.dll
    (and many more)
When it gets to the point were it tryes to copy Driver.cab file (27%) it then times out with error "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT"

After reading forums related to this 98% mentioned the RAM could be bad. I downloaded a RAM checker boot disc and the disc fails to boot. Says NTLDR is missing. I then try to boot to CD with F10 same issue.

    I AM SUPERLOST...
Thank you for any assistance in heliping me..

    Greetings, Superlost6.

You can try reseating any RAM modules, see if your symptoms change. Might even try cleaning the module contacts if this is an older machine.

Sounds to me like the hard drive may be failing. The "irql not less or equal" usually indicates driver and/or RAM problems, but your other symptoms are pointing to read/write errors.

Thanks for the fast reply. I will clean and reseat the ram.. (I did that with HD allready) I figured it was HD.. Yet, seen LOT'S of post with this "Copy File" errors during a new install of XP relating to RAM issue. I will post my finding after I clean RAM in about 15min
    Thank You

Be sure the DVD drive has been given the letter D. If not, change the location. Say the DVD drive is labeled F. copy from F:\i386.
Or, look in the XP that has been installed and see if there is an i386 folder. You might be able to point it to that to copy what is missing. C:\i386

The drive is D for CD.. I have other XP cd's.. I was able to insert the "other" CD's with XP on them to pull the files.. Bouncing back and forth from CD to CD I was able to copy all files needed. Then it stated to configure and got Blue screen once more.. I'm LOST

Do you have the capacity to download and burn .iso files? If so, you might consider running some hard drive diagnostics and/or a Linux distro, try to check out this machine's hardware.

Yes I can do that on this PC.. What do you recommend?

  10. Caliban

Mint, Puppy and Ubuntu are all nice and easy. Download the .iso file, and burn that file as an image to a CD/DVD (ImgBurn is a good .iso burning software if you don't already have one).

A quick tutorial for the image burning process is located here.

Then boot to that disk, and run the OS as a live environment (in other words, don't install it - just run it from the optical drive). Put the machine through some stresses, see if you can make it crash.

It might be an idea to test the XP CD's you've been using on another computer, copy the i386 folder onto the hard drive to see if an error occurs - if it doesn't, suspect the CD/DVD drive in your laptop to be faulty.

I have made boot cd with Memtest86+ using imgburn. The system will NOT BOOT to this. I try booting to CD from BIOS settings, tried F10 and will not6 boot. I however, can boot any CD thats store bought XP CD or Recovery CD yet that fails to copy the files correctly.

Perhaps the CD you burned was the wrong type for the drive, try a + if you used a - or a - if you used a +?

    Hi superlost6,

How did you make the boot CD? Did you use an ISO file that included memtest+ and was already made up?

If so did you use the "Write Image File to Disc" option in imgburn?

  16. Superlost6

I downloaded the file Memtest86+ "after" I downloaded "Imgburn" I went to imgburn opened the Memtest86 and used imgburn to copy to CD (the cd id in my D:) so I use it I feel correct. Maybe I am wrong. This is the only way I know to test the MEM as it has been said this is more then likely the issue.

If I am not doing this correct what steps do I do. I am going to Best Buys now to buy more blank CD's....

so download, exstract files then open imgburn and select "Write image to disk" correct? Also below is what I dowloaded

    ** Memtest86+ V4.20 (25/01/2011) **
Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)

Unpack the ISO from the zip, point the 'Write image file to disc' to the ISO.

And check Radio Shack for a deal on TDK CDs. $12.99 for 100. (A lifetime supply!)

You might also consider download a PartedMagic ISO while you are out. (157mb)
It includes memtest+ and also partitioning software. I've seen threads where letting a Linux program format the HD will then let Windows install for some reason. This would only work if it is a HD problem rather than a memory problem.

    top one - A

The other one is a script file, probably config information. You could also check the size of the files. One should be under 1MB and one will be much larger. Choose the larger one.

Ok PartedMagic ISO burned fine, booted fine, loaded fine, finished fine. rebboted PC by itself and loaded PartedMagic perfectly. (I wish windows did) now what do I do?

Hmm, I can't find memtest from the Parted Magic Start button (same place as Windows Start button). It was listed in the included programs.

I have to get back to work but I'll take a look at Parted Magic in an hour or so. Even if memtest isn't on here. It isn't a wasted download. Using Gparted to delete all partitions on your HD and creating a new one and letting Gparted format it to NTFS may be worth a shot to rule out a formatting quirk.

I'll reread the thread when I get back. You can try burning the memtest.iso as Collins pointed out it is the top one.

in PartedMagic, doing a Gparted on my 93.16mb ntfs file, what should I do shrink it or expand it?

First, I am I correct you don't need anything currently on that HD--since you are going to use it for a fresh install?

Now in Gparted, in the top right hand corner is it showing /dev/sda? What size partitions are listed in the graph--93mb is way too small for anything other than a Windows 7 System Reserved partition? Do you have other partitions listed?

There is only one, it has an unsucsefuly installed Wind XP Pro on it. (always timed out) It says "/dev/sda1 - ntsf size- 93.16GIB used 3.00 GIG unused - 90.16GIB Boot

    Only other thing listed is

That's a good thing, I've seen Windows/DOS FDISK that's put the end of partition off the end of the disk ... a little safety margin never hurts ;)

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

    Ok,

Just to be completely sure that it is not a partition problem I would start fresh.
Right-click the partition and select delete. Then the Apply button will be available along the top and hit Apply.

The view should refresh and you will just have grey area available. Right-click the grey area and select New. Primary Partition should be highlighted. Below Primary Partition for Filesystem use the drop down and select NTFS. Hit Add button. Then Apply along the top.

View should refresh and you should once again have a large NTFS partition with all space unused/free.

ok, will do it after the other test run.

Thats easy to understand. Once I delete this partition and make a new one. I then do an install with XP Pro disk correct?

    1. Do I select a "Quick" format
    2. Do I select a "Full" format
    3. Do I select a "Full" format wit NO changes

I think there the three they ask for. What would i select?

  37. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

I'm just going to put a couple things here.

    1) Memtest86+ is available from the PartedMagic CD. When you first bootup the CD you get a blue options menu asking how you want to start. Use the arrow keys to go down to Extras and from that menu is Memtest86+. So you can run that program rather than starting from RAM and going to the Parted Magic desktop.

Do you have an extra IDE data cable around? It might be worth trying a different cable on the HD to see if that makes a difference on Windows being able to copy the files. Or if no extra cable try swapping the CDROM and HD cables. See if the copy errors are the same. [Don't do this right away--try again to install Windows without swapping cables but keep it in mind.]

  38. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Full format. (If available--you might not get the option in Gparted)

Ok, done. Before I exit Partedmagig, do I resize this "New Partition"? or simply proceed with the new install of XP Pro?

Also note, I did a HD test on this and it passed fully

  40. Superlost6

    Superlost6 Specialist

No extra cables sorry :( I was able to get a HD test from Partedmagic and it passed all areas.. I will do the RAM test after format as I have started the format

  41. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

I would just try the XP Pro. It should see the partition (and list it as approx. 93000mb) and should have it highlighted it as the preferred option for install. You can let it format again or skip the format if it will let you.

I did the Full ntfs I don't think it messes with the size. Should be ok, by the way THANK YOU so much for your help. I have my fingers crossed. Did the LONG format as I feel maybe is best to go all out with newly done partition and see what happens. Will take maybe 30 min I will then report a status back!
    Thanks

Just to bring you to speed with this issue, when my brother gave me this to fix and I used Gateway recovery disc, it would boot start to fix "Untill it started to copy files" then would blue screen err.. I then got anopther NEW in the sleeve CD recovery from Gateway seller (factory sealed) same thing, when iot gets to "Copying Files" it cant load them. Would copy 2 files make me skip the next 20 copy 3 skip 10 untill it time out. I then got a XP Pro CD and tried to Foremat. Same issue, would go throught the format (untill time to copy files from CD tyhen would blue screen)

Would make one think it was bad CD's.. However I dont think so. 3 for 3 2 brand new sealed.. Thats just sick odds

  44. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

It is a notebook so no swapping cables , at least not easily, anyway.

I agree, three CDs can't be bad. The HD passes all tests so it shouldn't be that. It could be the CDROM is failing. Or, it could be memory.

At one point is was mentioned that trying one module of RAM at a time might eliminate a bad module. That is something to try and definitely give the modules a push to make sure one hasn't worked loose over time.

    I****
'm going to look around later to see if running the installation from a separate partition on the HD is a possibility. I seem to remember people doing that because it was faster than from CD but have never done it myself. (Satrow, have you tried that?)

  45. satrow

Yup, dropping the i386 folder onto the hard drive, boot from Win9x floppy, cd i386, winnt.exe is the trigger to loading XP from DOS, iirc., gotta have a boot method that loads Smartdrv.

If you can't copy the i386 folder onto the newly full-formatted drive, I'd be looking to remove and reseat the CD/DVD drive - or replacing it at this stage.

Darn, SAME THING.. After Format, goes to copy and then...

The file d3d8.dll was not copied correctly..

The file setup placed on your drive is NOT a valid Windows system image. If you are installing from a Win XP CD there may be a problem with CD.. Ship or retry

You should let memtest run for 7 passes or overnight to be sure - any errors will mean that there's a problem with the RAM or the way that the BIOS is setting the RAM.

Do you know if the hard drive is SATA or IDE (noting serial numbers from the BIOS might help us decipher it)? Does the laptop have a floppy drive, if so, do you have any good floppy disks that can be used to boot it with?
