Hello everyone and HAPPY NEW YEAR.
I am looking for help to get my computer back working again. I download some software and got some virus and or malware a couple days ago. I ran and cleaned with spyware doctor and after reboot I keep getting this message. I have tried to repair with chkdsk /p /r and repairing windows with 8 commands. Nothing is working. I have been doing this for several days. I looked at the microsoft post for useing dr watson but i could not understand how to use at the cmd prompt. Please help me get back.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, swhisenhunt...

Couple of questions: what operating system and service pack # are you running? Will the machine start in Safe Mode?

    Caliban,

    I'm running XP pro with SP2. When I try safe mode I get a STOP: 0X0000007b (0XF78AE528, 0X0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000) error.

I assume when you mentioned Dr. Watson that you are going by this post
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;156669

Steps 1 and 2 can be done by selecting F8 at startup and selecting command prompt.
However, when you reboot, I'm not sure Dr. Watson will run, particularly since windows doesn't start.

    plodr,

That is the post. I don't know the correct typing, and I am not sure if it will run.

When I run chkdsk it finds 1 bad, but it doesn't explain which part. When I do a chkdsk repair it will not say it didn't fix the problem, it just doesn't repair it.

    System root is C:
as far as the last letter, I think it is a small el
    so you would type
    C:\System32\Drwtsn32.exe -I

    As far as
Explain a bit further what 8 commands you used. This will help troubleshooter figure out if you had made the hard drive better or worse.

It would also help to mention the brand and model of computer. Do you have a windows XP disk or a recovery/restore disk?

I can't get Dr watson to work keeps saying command not recognized. I read microsoft again and it is an -i.

8 Commands that I used can be found here -

Computer is an IBM T43. I've tried the recovery disk, XP home disk, and XP pro disk to no avail.

Have you gone into the BIOS to be sure the CD drive is the first bootable device?

What happened when you tried the recovery disk? Did your computer come with a recovery partition?

As far as your initial error stop c000021a, it can be so many things so it is very hard to figure out the one solution that will work for you. Also the fact that you can't boot into safe mode just adds an additional challenge.

Perhaps after trying a linux live CD, we will try this

When I turn on the computer with the cd in it I say to press any button to boot from cd.

I do have an option to use IBM rescue and recovery, but scared to loose my programs.

When I get to work in the morning I will download a linux cd. Which one should I use, knoppix, mint 8, etc?

I have mint 8 running on my computer. How can I use it to repair my old system?

Repair, I don't know. As I said, it is hard to tell from your error exactly what the problem is. If I can't figure out what is broken, I can not tell you a fix.
I'd use linux to grab the files you want, then do a recovery, which will remove EVERYTHING but those things that came on the IBM when it was new.

I haven't looked at Mint in a long time. Maybe your hard drive hda will get mounted automatically. If so, plug in a USB stick or drive and copy the files from hda to the usb device. Do not move because if something hiccups during the transfer, you will lose the file. If you select copy instead and something hiccups, the file will still be safe on your windows hard drive and you can try to copy it again.
