Okay, so last week, my machine suddenly stopped being able to do pretty much anything (such as getting on the web... running several key programs, etc) An Avast! virus scan found a number of trojans infecting my windows folder, which I allowed it to delete as they could not be repaired. At this point, my machine would only boot to a blank desktop (no start menu, no desktop items, nothing) When I used the task manager to run my windows disk and reinstall windows, my computer stopped even beibng able to get that far... currently all i can get it to do is display the following error message:

    ***STOP: 0x0000001E (0xC0000005, 0xEB631A59, 0x00000000, 0x00000028)
    KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Please help me fix this problem, I amn beginning to got through withdrawl! Thanks for any help

If it has any bearing, I have recently been experiencing this stop message when my pc gets bumped:

    ***STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x0000000C, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xF6DF4F9A)
    Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
    ***Address F6DF4F9A Base at F6DF0000, DateStamp 3DCC4FBE-LH1DUSB.SYS
    Beginning Dump of Physical Memory
    Physical Memory Dump Complete.

Please, any help is appreciated, i am getting very frustrated

Don't use task manager to run Windows Setup. Boot directly off the CD. If your CD is not bootable you will have to make boot floppies(go to MS and search boot XP)

If you have data on the machine that you want to recover:

Once you have Setup running, try a repair first. That just might get you going again.

If that doesn't work try an over the top install. That means reinstalling Windows into the C:\Windows folder. During this process new user folders will be created but your old user folders will still be in C:\Documents and Settings.

Once you recover your data and since your machine has been trashed by virus, I would recommend a format and re-install Windows.

Ok, I already tried running boot disks and running a repair, and upon rebooting, my computer went to the same blank desktop as before, and when i tried running the boot disks again, the computer went straight to a blank screen that said no operating system found. It was at this point that I booted to the task manager again and booted the disk from there. Should I try creating new floppies? By the way, I am using 2000 pro, not XP (yech)

This is still not working for me... If anyone has any suggestions, they would be appreciated... Im getting fairly desperate here, I need my PC for my work and this down time is going to cause some serious deadline problems

A couple of things to read through Dallas

worth reading if going down the In-Place Upgrade route

now with all repairs there is a risk of loosing data.... so if you have important stuff on that HD for one and I'm not going to leature but I hope you have that data backed up? but if not and this has worked for me I installed a small spare HD and installed the OS fresh on that then made the faulty OS drive slave and did manage to get the data off it before attempting a repair install ( it was XP but that process should be the same for both OS's afaik ).

Hey thanks for all the help, my system is back up! (I was about to have a breakdown!) Now, my main problem lies in getting my old programs to work. They have been giving me errors along the lines of "*filename*.dll not found". I assume this has something to do with my reset registry, and as such i am going about reinstalling my programs. With a few older games however, upon trying to reinstall them I get an error saying "this version of windows is not supported by this product"... I am using the same OS as before, so why isn't this working?

I ran the windows update program, and installed everything on it already... Is there any way to find out exactly what I need to run these programs?

The game I'm trying to run is Fallout, and I think my problem could be stemming from the fact that it is a dos based game... Should I be trying to go about this some otther way
