I've got the usual Windows "Shared files" and "Owner's files". Is "Shared files" needed on a computer that isn't netted? Can it be chucked out or deleted?

You could just make them private, might want to use at a later date.

    Right click folder
    Properties
    Sharing
    Check "Make this folder private"
    OK

Repeat for folders Shared Documents and sub-folders, I only have four, main and three sub folders in XP.

I'm not a file share person, someone else might have a better idea.

i think they are turned off if you open windows explorer or my comp, go tools, folder options, view & the very last entry should be "enable simple file sharing" or something like that.
i THINK that turns it off.
dont quote me on that one though ;)

Thanks, gents, for your efforts. While I was using Cat-9's idea I found I could stop sharing for the whole drive. I'll try deleting "shared files' now.
