Hi, its my first time here, so sorry if I sound a bit stupid! We recently got an email at work saying that please could everyone delete any unnecessary files from their home areas. I don't have anything worth saving in my home area, but I have around 40GB of movies and MP3s on my desktop. The hard drives are partitioned (i think) so that its like C: and then I: J: L:

Our home areas are in L: I wanted to know whether the stuff on my desktop is hogging the hard drive, and which is the best external hard drive on the market at the mo (under GBP100). And also, whats the difference between USB and firewire?

Thanks, and sorry for taking so much time!

    Welcome to majorgeeks.

40gb on a work pc is a lot so you probably are.
I usually get my externals from ebay you can usually get a 200gb for under £80.
The difference between usb and firewire is transfer speed firewire is faster but if you just want to play movies and mp3 from it usb 2.0 should be more than suffice.

IF its a work PC and you on a network, then it sounds a bit like th setup I have at work, in which I have a C: Drive which is the local PC and also access to network Drives ( mine are R = personal and I = departmental )

Goto My Computer and check which drives you have, if your using XP then My Computer will tell you which drives you have under headings of

Hard Disk Drives ~ Local C: Drive
Network Drives ~ Drives off the servers..

generally used as Home Areas, these can easily be monitored by the admins and if they are getting full as most users are allocated a certain amount of space, network admins then send out emails like you got.

Check your C: Drive by again going to My Computer and rightclick properties and check Used and Free space.. this will give you big clue as to how much is used, you could do same on the Home Drives.

I would be thinking the Home areas are Network drives.

Hi again, just a quick question. Do all external hard drives have to be plugged into a power socket when transferring data?
