Last year I burned my files to a CD for storage. I tried to open the Excel Files in Excel, same program they were burned from. When I try to open them I am receiving the following message: " The file is read only or you maybe trying to access a read only location. Or the server the document is stored on may not be responding." I tried to open the files using the excel directions but I am unable. I am afraid that all my files Word, Quicken PowerPoint etc. will all be unabled to open. Do you have any advise for me? I guess storing on CD's is not the way to go is it? Thank you for any advice in advance.

    Thank you,

    Wadda

Try copying one file burned on the CD to your computer desktop. Right click the file and select properties. See if you can change it from read only.

I tried to copy to desktop. Receive an error message: The Parameter is Incorrect.

How did you copy? Did you get this error with a drag and drop to the Desktop?

What file extension is on the file and what is the size of the file?

What program did you use to burn them?

I tried both ways. I went into the properties as directed by EXcel help and unclicked the read only. Nothing is working. Any other thoughts, please?

What did you use to burn the files?
If you can't see the extension, it might not be an excel extension, even if that is what you wanted to burn.

Some CD burn software have to be finalized or something to that effect until this step is done everything burned is difficult to pull open and use %&%#$*^ Therefore try to view the files from My Computer try copy past from CD to your file directory or click file and try save as I think you have to change the name either way.

Odd it won't let you copy the files back to your computer. Have you tried individual files?

If you can get one copied to your computer, set your computer to "view hidden extensions" and see if the file name has an .xls extension. If not, add .xls to it and see if it will open that way.

I just reread this thread are you saying you cannot even copy the files to the HD? You get a bad parameter when using drag-n-drop?

Have you tried using the same computer with the same CDROM that you used to burn the files to move them to the HD? [...If you still have it]
