Storytime!!! little issue

little issue - last night i rebotted my comp and went to sleep, this morning I signed in. I checked the email, started world community grid, and logged on to here and in taskmanager it says my commit charge is ~607meg/1267meg. that is also the pagefile number. does that mean my ram is full? what is physical memory/kernel memory? Is there anything I can do to use less? I think the issue with games and stuff is that they are like in page file or whatever and thats too slow - is that realistic and can I get them into the faster place?

I'm not 100% sure what you are asking here but first you need to know that when a PC has used all available RAM when running a program it will switch to using "Virtual Memory". This is actually the pagefile you are talking about and is just a file on your hard drive and in reality has nothing to do with RAM.

If you have more RAM installed, say 512Mb instaed of 128Mb your PC will run much faster as it it does not have to use the much slower "Virtual Memory".

Therefore if you want a faster PC you need more RAM in the first instance and, in nearly all cases, this will be the best upgrade you can give to a PC.

 

yeah thats what i want. no virtual memory. is there a way I can tell guild wars or whatever to use RAM not virtual memory?

 

All programs will use RAM in preference to Virtual Memory but when that is used it has no choice. How much RAM do you actually have and what OS are you using?
