Strange computer problem

I just recently had to replace my motherboard, i went with a used asus a7n8xe. Computer boots up fine, but a couple of times now, it stops responding in windows.
It's not freezing up, I can move the mouse around, open the taskmanager but no programs will open or close and desktop utilities freeze up.
The taskmanager shows 0 straight down the CPU list and also for the commit charge when this happens.

Alright, so I have to restart the computer with the reset switch, and the CMOS resets itself. I go through and readjust the settings in the Bios and the computer will work fine for a number of days.
I don't know if a dying CMOS battery could cause this to happen, and bad ram shouldn't affect the CMOS, should it?

 

As I was reading your post, the first thing that came to mind was "dying CMOS battery"; so replace it ASAP. Download and run a memory diagnostic from the Memory section here at MajorGeeks; I prefer the bootable ones (like the Microsoft Memory Diagnostic). Just about any faulty device can wreck havoc on a PC: I've seen bad floppy drives do ALL sorts of crazy stuff to a PC. Then again, the MB was used. Maybe the BIOS is corrupt; if replacing the CMOS battery doesn't do it, and the RAM passes the extended diagnostic, look into flashing the BIOS. Go to the Asus web site, and download the newest BIOS available for your model of MB and read the 'how-to-flash' info, and use their flash utility.... other than that, all I can think of is maybe your OS is messed up and needs a reload.... good luck!
