Strange Hard Drive Problem

I just got a Dell Dimension 3100 and it was suppose to have a 80GB hard drive but when I put the mouse over the Drive Icon it says it's a 70GB HD what up with that. also I only added about 10GB of my own apps but it says 25 GB are being taken up.

 

Did you buy it new or used. If used, you may want to do a fresh install of windows. If new, you may want to go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the OEM junk you don.t need. As far as the lost 10 Gigs, it may be a translation issue or the Drive may have a service partition on it. The Disk Manager would tell you what you need to know. Go to Start--> Run--> diskmgmt.msc and hit enter.

 

whats OEM junk. and there's is a service partition so thats where the 10 GB has gone to.

 

OEM junk like trial software and all kinds of Dell stuff that most people will never use. Most OEM manufacturers seem to manage to overload the computers with useless junk.

 

That's the recovery partition, most likely. You get that because the manufacturer is too cheap to supply a recovery or MS installation disc. There is usually an option to save that to CD/DVD in the Administrative or System Tools folder in the programs menu. OEM junk is the free Nortons and AOL trial and all the other great offers that come preinstalled on the computer 'for your convenience'.
