WinXP MCE SP2. Every time this laptop is booted up, this weird icon appears in the system tray down by the clock (screen shot attached). It goes away after the desktop has completely loaded, but it's still weird. The icon is the symbol for "new hardware detected" and it has one of those "disabled" symbols on top of it: the red circle with the line through it. Everything is working fine on this PC so it doesn't seem to be affecting anything. I thought maybe the UPnP service was disabled, or the hardware detection service was disabled, so I uninstalled some devices, and rebooted, and they were detected and they installed OK. So, any ideas?

Correct its the hardware icon, and one is likely disabled, anything disabled or with yellow ! mark in Device Manager.

Unplug all USB items apart from Keyboard and Mouse, as it could be one of them, without driver loaded.
