strange internet connection

I have a first (for me)
On the toolbar it tells me that i have no internet access and yet i am using the internet now to post this.http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/confused/huh-smiley-emoticon.gif
If i restart the PC it comes back just the same and in the "internet sharing and network" it shows i am connected????
I am using Windows 7 pro

Everything is as it should be in device manager.
I shut down the whole system (router/powerlines and distributor that's a special unit from my ISP) but it remains the same.

It's the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.

 

Theory:

You are connected via wifi, but that is an ethernet not connected symbol, which would be a wired NIC which you are probably not connected to.


Am I close or way off?

 

I am hard wired via powerline.
My system has been set up this way for 4 years and today is the first time i have seen this.

 

Can you expand your network devices in device manager and take a screenshot to post here?

Interesting. Do you truly have two NICs of the same type?

See which one applies to the connection icon and try disabling it in device manager.

 

I do not fully understand why there are two so i disabled them one at a time but it did not change anything.

The first one is port 6 and the #2 is port 4

I also tried updating the drivers and both said they were up to date.

I am wondering if i uninstall the #2 would it be an option?

 

Try it.

I assume powerline networking has some software involved. It might also be worth trying to install that.

 

I uninstalled #2 and restarted the PC, as soon as it started the #2 reinstalled itself but the red cross is gone.
