strange internet problems

i an trying to diagnose my friends internet connection...firefox and ie and other programs dont work but i can connect to ad aware updates and bear share...all internet settings are set as should be...any ideas? tia

 

Are you running any firewalls? Can you ping www.majorgeeks.com?

Are you behind a router?

Try running: winsock XP fix: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4372

 

This may not help, but visit a site without logins and all of that, just a basic site, because you may have some weird Cookie Settings.

 

Okay, I ran the winsock fix and it connected back to the internet for certain sites but others it won't access or takes forever to do...

What could be causing this...

 

logged on to another unsecure wireless network and it doesn't have this problem so I am thinking it has to be hardware related with the router and modem...

Any ideas?

 

Try connecting the computer directly to your modem, bypassing the router. Are you still having issues?

If you do not have any issues, I'd suggest resetting the router to factory defaults, and set the router back up.
