I was just given an old computer that still has decent hardware and memory. I want to gut the case and put the inerds on my wall. I want to have a computer on my wall with no case. Is this a stupid idea? What are the pros and cons?

Is it even possible to have a working pc on your wall with no case?

I don’t know if it is possible or not. But I am going to try. The ground is a concern. Any ideas on how to best achieve this? Another concern is dust control.

only problems i can think of are, like u said, grounding and dust. however, you most likely wont need fans, except maybe the CPU, depending on the proc. Maybe aluminum foil for the mobo backing and a wire to the ground? Just an idea, dunno if thats even possible or a good idea lol. Keep the ideas coming guys! this sounds like it could be a sweet mod

Yes, glue a layer of HeavyDuty Aluminum foil to the base of your display - even better would be to use a Lian Li mobo drawer to hold that part of your display system (provides some support for your add-on cards as well - Froogle for them, they are available as replacement parts. Or you could cut the mobo pan along with the add-on card supports from a cheap case. Wire the mobo pan to the metal of the PSU case with a piece of heavy gauge wire.

The main other problem is RFI/EMI. You are responsible for containing those so they don't interfere with a neighbor's (or even your own) equipment. I wouldn't want to see the FCC van pulling up into your driveway... ;)

I don't think the motherboard needs to ground on the case.
Some cases/motherboards have plastic standoffs, and mine has tiny plasticy washers between the mobo and case.

I would've thought the power supply would be earthed, else there would be a chance of electric shock from touching the case.

    Here's a link to a likeminded modder ;-)

Theres no need for a motherboard to gound on the case as far as I know, I have all the parts of a computer lying around on a work bench and at one point had a full rig just screwed to a bench which I used for testing memory and pci cards etc, all worked fine. I think the if the mb needs a ground it will be through the PSU

The old lady put the kibosh on this idea, and in the name of keeping the peace I had to concede. I am going to think of a case mod that is not so intrusive to the rest of the family. I really appreciate everybody’s input, thanks for your help.
P.S. I wear the pants in my house, the wife just tells me which ones to put on!! LOL:rolleyes:

Yep keep the mobo back spaced of the wall for greater thermal flow but yea sounds like a good idea. Just be aware that the electro-magnetic force from running an eletronic device will naturally attract many dust particles (after all basic chem will indicate that dust is fine particles of postively and negatively charged molecules) and they will love an exposed electronic device.
