I have an HP G62 Laptop. I did an HP diagnostic test of the hard drive and it failed Short DST. Long DST was fine. I ran chkdsk and found no bad sectors or problems. The computer runs fine, no problems with boot up or runs apps.

Can this Short DST fail be a false positive? Can Short DST be fixed?

    Thanks.

I guess my first question is, why did you decide to do a diagnostic? Have you been having system stability issues?

I ran an application that intermittently was giving me an error that said there was a I/O device error. It's the only app gave me the problem. Windows 7 runs fine.

So you ran the HD diagnostics from the BIOS right and got those results?

How long have you had the computer, and or hard drive?

I've had the computer about a year and a half.

Yes, ran HD diagnostic from BIOS.

A friend of mine thought it might be some bad sectors.

Could a Short DST fail be the result of bad sectors?

Thanks for the reply Bata :spam and although a San Jose Asian Escort sounds tempting, right now I'm trying to fix my hard drive! :mad Now if one of your escorts knows anything about Short DST failures, that's another story.

It is unusual for the Short test to fail and the long test to pass. Usually it would be the other way around.

Don't take it to the bank but I believe the short test reads the SMART data (a cumulative list of errors on the disk that when it reaches a threshold the SMART status is marked bad) and also does a few random reads around the disk and if no errors found it passes.

The long test tries to read every sector and if too many bad sectors it fails.

So if you passed the long test you should be fine.

Why not run the manufacturer's diagnostic and see what it says about the drive. http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

Many manufacturer's only have DOS utilities so you would have to burn the ISO file to a CD and boot the computer from that to run the test. Imgburn's "Write Image File to Disc" will accomplish the burning to CD.
