When I click on one desktop icon, they all highlight.........the only way I can navigate is to right click on the programme I want, then click open....

I am also unable to type anything that involves lower case...I can press caps lock to get the lower case letters, but it still wont let me access the lower case punctuation etc......

This happens for around the first 15 mins of having windows open, then settles down....any ideas?

    Greetings and welcome to MajorGeeks!

Does the same thing happen while in safemode?

    If not, then try:

Click START, then RUN, then type in msconfig (press enter).

Now, click the radial button "Selective Startup".
    Then uncheck "Load Startup Items."

    Does it still happen?

Note, the above is just a temp workaround, we need to narrow down, what is causing the issue.

There is another step to the above process, btw. :)

So, it does happen within safemode?

So, unplugging the keyboard (while the computer is shut off), and repluggin it in, still have the same issue?

AHA....that seems to have fixed it!.....meaning what?
    Is my keyboard kaput?

Which part, that it works in safe mode?

OR, that unplugging the keyboard and replugging the keyboard worked for ye?

If the later, then either the keyboard is going kaput, or you are experiencing the same that I am. My MOBO is dying, so, I'm using a usb keyboard.

No......unplugging the keyboard seems to have worked.....

My computer is only a couple of years old, so it shouldnt be the motherboard...should it?
However, I,m a bit rough on the keyboard.....
I,ll try another keyboard & see if it stops doing it.....

BTW....thanks very much for your help....
I,ve been battling with this for 3 weeks....I thought I had been hacked, & was running constant virus scans etc, to no avail....it was driving me insane!

It shouldn't be the motherboard. It might have been caused by an accidental (or agressive) kick on the computer. ;)

Hope all works well now. :)

Rough on the keyboard, eh?. I bet ye are not like me, with 5 keyboards in the closet, waiting to be used.

I've been known to destroy my keyboard, in frustration...During hard core Civ3 gaming. :)

    :)

    Surprisingly my mouse has survived.

It sure sounds to me that one of your shift keys is sticking. If it happens again try "pounding" ;) on each of them and figure out which one is the culprit, then if problem persists take KB apart and clean that key.
