Strange Ripple Distortion On Samsung 49" Monitor

    Hello,

I recently purchased a Samsung CHG90 49" ultra wide gaming monitor. I think it's fantastic, but unfortunately I've encountered a strange problem. When the monitor is displaying a moving image I periodically experience a horizontal ripple of distortion that moves up the screen. I've created a video of the problem:

At about the 19 second mark you should be able to see a horizontal line of distortion start at about mid-screen and move upward. In the video it's most visible on the left side of the screen. (I apologize for the not so great picture quality; it was recorded with my phone.)

    Some facts:

-The distortion seems to be only visible at higher Hz - 100Hz+.

-The distortion only appears when there's a moving image on the screen. One time I was moving a large icon around on the screen and the distortion briefly "framed" the icon while no of the other static imagery of the desktop was distorted.

-I don't believe this problem has anything to do with dirty electricity. I've tried plugging the monitor into different outlets around the room and I encounter the same problem. I also purchased a Tripplite Isobar with RFI/EMI filtering and a UPS with voltage regulation and even when plugged into these two devices the monitor has an issue with the distortion. Additionally, I had no such issues with my previous X34 monitor.

-The problem seems to come and go. Sometimes I encounter the distortion every couple of minutes, while at other times I can go over an hour without any visible distortion.

-The distortion varies in intensity. At times only a thin, inconspicuous ripple moves up the screen, at other times the ripple is quite thick and very obvious.

-The distortion appears regardless of whether or not v-sync is enabled.

-This monitor has free-sync, however, I'm not using it as I currently own and Nvidia GPU.

Any suggestions on what might be causing this problem would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

    -Ryan

Rippling effect can be caused by many things.

I have looked multiple times on the video you posted and could not see it.I think it was just an effect of the game you where playing. Some games have that effect.

I'll try to take a better video. It is definitely NOT an effect of the game. This distortion is present on EVERY game/application I've tested that has moving imagery. Additionally, this distortion was NOT present with my previous monitor. It's unfortunate that the video doesn't show the issue better, but if you take the time to look closely at the upper left side at around the 19/20 second mark it should be apparent. Regardless, thank you for your reply.

What is your Screen Resolution and what is your Refresh rate.

Edit i saw it that time.

It looks like it might be a refresh rate issue.Look and see if your refresh rate is 60 hertz. If not then put it at 60 to see if it might make a difference.Normally if the refresh rate is out of range like at 52 hertz it will cause that kinda problem.

Screen resolution is 1080p - 3840 X 1080. Refresh rate is adjustable- 60, 80, 100, 120, 144Hz. However, the distortion appears to only be present when the refresh rate is set at 100Hz or above. Thanks!

In all honesty you really don't need to go above 60 hertz or below.Any thing that is below will most likely start herting your eyes after a while.

Have you check for driver updates?
Open Device manager and check both Display Adapters and Monitors.

I have seen this ripple effect on older monitors like the big box ones. They ran mostly on 52 hertz back in the day.

Well, I purchased the monitor specifically for its high refresh rate. Limiting it to 60Hz would be like buying and Ferrari and only driving at 45 mph. :)

All my drivers appear to be up to date. That's an excellent suggestion though. Thanks for weighing in.

Well that is the reason why your monitor is giving the distortion is the refresh rate is either so high or so low.If any thing i found in the past that a higher refresh rate higher then 100 will be consider out of range for most monitors. And it should not be set on a auto refresh rate. Most games any more can't go past 60 frames per second. The highest i would go is 75 frames per second.Any thing above 75 is considered as over kill the gaming market.I have yet to see a system go past 60 frames per second there will be a bottle neck some where like there all ways is.

There are very few systems out there built that can handle a higher range of graphics.

You say you have an Nvidia GPU card.......what are its specifications?
Your system specs would not go astray either!

The issue never occurred with the old monitor you said, what was its specs, mainly the refresh rate you ran with it?

That looks a lot like some version of Gran Turismo. Are you running this via emulation, or is this a PC ported game that used the same track?

BTW, was your old "monitor" a plasma TV? They were 600 Hz.

You can put your screens at the max hertz,But it does not make a difference. If any thing it's going higher then 72 hertz will heat up TV's and monitors.

And will cause Visible framerate which is limited by refresh rate. Having vsync off just gives you tearing when FPS > refresh rate.

So it is best to let windows set it at optimal as a rule. And most games only use 60 as is.There are very few games out there that can use a higher frame rate.
