i have a compaq pc with windows xp installed on it. lately a strange siren like sound has started coming from my pc. sometimes it keeps coming until i restart while sometimes it comes for a few seconds and stops. if i reduce the speaker volume to zero, it reduces but is audible but if i increase the volume it becomes louder. also when it comes is not fixed and whenever it comes the pc sort of hangs for a few seconds. does anyone know what is it?how can the problem be fixed? please help.

you might have a bad fan, and it's somehow emitting thru your sound card. you didn't say if you have a on-board sound, or a card.

if at all possible, you can stop each fan while the noise is there to see if it gets eliminated.

    if not..post back.

From a previous post, it is most likely a fan problem, or hard drive problem in that order.

Probably a fan bearing. As suggested earlier, can you isolate fan/fans, one at a time, to see if that is the problem. Be careful running without a fan going for any extended period of time.

Re hard drive. Can you install hard drive as a slave on another pC to see if the noise occurs on that PC? MIghtn't be a bad idea to back up all your important stuff asap in case it is the hard drive on it's way out. Bazza

most power supplies can be taken apart, and you can change the fan.

You will either have to splice the wires (red to red/black to black) or buy a fan that will plug into the circuit board as the original fan. I have changed many of them.
