Hi All, I have this problem with my relatively new Vaio VGN-FW480J. When I start the thing, it may start okay but majority of the times:

    • the green power led will come on
    • the charging light will come on
    • the fans will be spinning
    • the hard drive will be spinning
    • BUT NO DISPLAY!!!

I know for sure its not a backlight problem and that the problem must lie elsewhere. Ive replaced almost everything, blu-ray drive, hard-drive, ram, booting without battery, removing battery for over 12hrs, nothing seems to solve the problem. What can be the problem and how do I fix it?

    Greetings, droid_adikt.

Do you happen to have a spare monitor? Most laptops have a VGA connector - you could connect an external monitor for troubleshooting.

Can you boot to your BIOS at all?

    Hi Caliban,

Thats the worrying part, I cant boot to my BIOS at all. I also tried connecting to an external monitor and that too didnt work. Because it does work after several attempts, I ran VAIO hardware check and my video card passed with flying colors, actually the hardware test didnt detect any faults with the system.. :confused

    That ain't good.

Couple of quick shots: try pulling the hard drive and starting the machine, see if you can get into BIOS. Also, will it boot to the optical drive (recovery or Windows disk)?

What OS are you running? Vista 64 bit or a version of Win 7?
What happens when you try and access the BIOS?

I was looking through the driver updates for your model

specifically video and BIOS but neither seem to mention a black screen problem.

Hi Guys, Ive tried booting without the hard drive, i updated to the latest version of BIOS but no luck. Im running Windows 7 Ultimate 64. Something i forgot to mention is that when i power it, it comes on, off, then on again, at which point it will either work perfectly, or it will be stuck on a black screen and ill need to press and hold the power button to shut it off and try again. In the period between turning the laptop on and getting stuck, nothing gets displayed on the screen. I actually know its stuck because immediately i turn it on, there will be no HDD activity.
