Stride6 memory failure - eh?

Just put together a pc out of old bits and bought 2 x SDRAM 512 MB PC133 modules on ebay to beef it up a bit. Thought I'd better test them and ran windows memory diagnostic v 0.4 which reports varying 'stride6' errors.

OS is XP, mob is assus k7v, cpu is amd athlon 700 mhz.

mob has 3 slots. if I run the test with EITHER dimm on its OWN there are NO errors reported, but if I run test with BOTH dimms installed, regardless of which slots they go in, errors occur. always from the same module.

seems to me [but i am NOT techy!] that it must therefore be the dimm rather than the mob but thought I'd check with the collective wisdom here!

Thanks for any advice or help.

I said I wasn't a techy! As I can't fathom how to edit my original post [which a foot note says I can] here's a correction. There are three slots, 1,2,3. Two DIMMS A and B. Tested separately A works in 1,2,3 without errors. B works in 1 and 3 without errors but in 2 shows errors. Testing A and B together B produces errors whether in 1 or 2. I have not bothered with permutations including 3 as clearly SOMETHING is amiss - but what?
