Leaving shortly to the new job!! Love it!! I am now a School Bus Driver:eek: !!

Or to be politically correct....Oswego District 308 Transportation Associate:rolleyes:

    Nah....just a school bus driver!!:)

Definately keep us posted on the progress...I'm sure there will be plenty of us on standby if need be!! I get a three hour break in the middle of the day, so I will most definately be checking in!!:)

    Good Luck

@ quirk...thanks and have fun with your c++ project:)

@ rog...good for you! My mom drove bus for years! Most of the time she really liked it cuz she did get that break mid day which allowed her to get other things done and having her hours coincide with our school hours was a bonus too.:) She actually started out as a bus aide then started transporting handicapped children to the BOCES program and later, taking high school juniors and seniors to the BOCES technical school.:)

    Hope you enjoy it!:)

Will keep y'all posted on my progress! & Thanks!!:) I'm ready to go but have to hold off as I have to drill the mounting holes for one of the fans yet (had to wait for drill to recharge) and don't want to disturb my neighbors with the noise. Of course I could just go ahead and be a witch and just DO it:D...if they complain I can just tell them it's pay back for all the times they woke me up slamming their doors and blasting their music.:D:D:D

Thanks guys:) but I've seem to hit a stumbling block and it was all going so well too.:(

I have drawn a complete and total blank (ok..I'm having a major blond moment! LOL) with setting the jumpers on my hd's. MY mb doesn't support cable select so I need to set one as master and the other as slave then when I get everything transfered from the 40gig to the 250 I'll reverse it but uhmm....lost here....

Other than that, everything is put together but I've been scratching my head over this one for a while....think I've developed a bald spot....*cracking up*

if you have one harddisk (set To Master) put the jumper has the diagram said and push it in...

Both are set to default right now (csel) so I will have to change both, one to master and one to slave.

Ok, so when I get to the point where I'm ready to reverse it b/c I want my 40gig to be my primary will the pins be easy to pull back out? What is the best way and or thing to use to push them in or pull them back out again? Just want to make sure I don't damage them.:)

Both hd's are IDE's. Figured when I bought the second one I should stick with the same kind I already had.

Just tried pushing the pins in one and no luck:eek: Do they push in really hard? Just saw the post about the tweezers..will go grab a pair and give that a try...

Just turn your stereo up high Abbysue...they'll never hear the drill then ;)

Sounds like you have your day cut out.

I'm stuck in the office all day, but will get out to see my daughter at lunch time. Our son coaches basketball, so we will go watch his team tonight :)

Big plans for this weekend, but can't say anything in here...just in case my husband gets the urge to read this forum :D

This has GOT to be THE BLOND moment of ALL time. All this time I've been fiddling with the old drive trying to figure out this pin issue and how in hell these stupid things could possibly be pushed in...finally took the new drive out of the static wrap and lo and behold there is a plastic shunt on the jumpers which I had to move over to set the drive to master. There is a second shunt in the bag with the IDE cable which I can place on my old drive to set it to slave.

    That sound about right guys?:eek::)

*goes off to hide head in sand*

Well..scratch that...the second doohickie that I thought I could use on the old drive doesn't fit flush on the pins.

  17. AbbySue

    AbbySue MajorGeeks Administrator

I think my butterflies have evolved into a panic attack:eek: LMAO

The what I now know to be the 'jumper' on the new drive is a white plastic thing that completely covers 2 pins like it should..right?:). In the bag was a second similar item in black does fit over 2 pins on the old drive but it doesn't completely cover them ie: the pins stick out the top of it. Is that ok?

There must have been a jumper on the old drive but it had to have fallen off when I tore down the puter a few weeks ago and the hd and mb being the only things I've never worked on before I didn't know to look for it. Added to that, my eye sight isn't what it used to be and I don't have proper glasses so that doesn't help any either. I've gone through all my little envelopes of parts, crawled around on the floor, even went through the crud in the vacuum (ACK!) and can't find the old jumper.

Oiy! Do you think this is going to work?

My Bad...should have started a different thread in hardware instead of hijacking this one...oh well..it was my thread to hijack right?:D LOL

Doesn't have to fit flush, just has to make contact. If you look closely, you should see that there's a metal piece bridging the two pin holes in the plastic jumper, that link the two pins when in position. As long as pins meet metal inside the jumper, you're good to go.

Phew! Thanks GT! Looks like I'm ok with that then. WooHoo! Crisis passed.:)

Except... these jumpers - they're not wooly are they?

The jumpers are just a bit of plastic with a bit of conductive metal in them They are used to electrically close (short) the appropriate pins. From your diagrams, you only need one per drive, in the position indicated for master and slave. It doesn't matter if the pins stick through the end of the jumpers - just as long as each pin is making contact (i.e. not loose). They are the same as the jumpers found on the mainboard, or other circuit boards, and perform the same task (i.e. to electrically connect two pins). They may well be smaller jumpers, though - depending on your drive make/model. That's about it. make any sense to ya?

Oh, b.t.w. – Tweezers are real handy for pulling jumper off, and pushing them in position.

If you get it wrong, you won't blow the H.D. up, or anything, but the comp may not detect the H.D. correctly, or not at all.

Good luck - and God speed, young Abby! :)

(And, no Goldy, that would be a sweater – which is ‘prolly what Abby is doing right now! :D ).

    Ha Ha! goldy! :p

Looks like I'm at a stand still until Chris gets home.:( Was putting in the mb, set all the screws in place to make sure I didn't miss any of the contact points..gave each a partial turn by hand...the last screw hung up as soon as I started to turn it...it's stuck...can't get it out..can't screw it in..it's stripped...never even got to screw in the screws:( Lifted all the screws back out of the holes except the nicely stuck one...that one came out along with the contact nut from the mb tray hanging off the back off the mb. Tool box is in Chris's car and I can't get a grip on the stupid thing...gonna have to wait for a pair of pliers. *sigh*

I'm so bummed out I could cry.:( Think a soak in the tub with a good book is in order.:) LOL

If I can't put the nut/contact/doohickey thing back b/c that is what is messed up and not the screw itself will that be an issue? It wasn't from one of the corners but the second one in from the lower right corner.

Actually, it usually doesn't matter, even if you miss out a screw or two, if it's a stripped thread problem. Same apllies the the screw pillars (the doo-dad under the screw. ;)

  27. AbbySue

That's what I'm talking about..wasn't sure of the term for them...but that is what is hanging off the back of my mb with a screw merrily wobbling around on the front.:(

I thought if you missed getting a screw in one of them you could short the board out once you power up...must be I have it confused with something else?

Thanks BooM...my back is sore..hurt it last night so it should do double duty.:)

If you've got an old pair of scissors, that you don't care to bugger up...just use them in place of needlenose pliars, on the backside of the mobo and use the screwdriver, ofcourse on the upside of the mobo, wheret the regular screw is in. You'll probably find that it won't take much to break it loose. Hell...you might not even mess up the scissors!! Or you might be able to do it with a pair of kitchen tongs!! Like I said...it really probably isn't that jammed.

Hey! How'd the morning run go?

  30. Phantom

    Phantom Brigadier Britches

That kinda thing happens to me often. That's when the (strong) tweezers come in handy, again. If you can get a hold of the screw shaft, or get the tweezers under the screw head, it should be able to be unscrewed again. Knife under screw head works, sometimes too, LoL!

As long as the mainboard isn't wobbling around, it shouldn't short out. From the position you described, that shouln't happen.

  31. AbbySue

    AbbySue MajorGeeks Administrator

Kitchen tongs worked thanks Roger!:) Discovered the 'monster' screw that got stuck needed to go in one particular spot that other screws wouldn't tighten down in...that has to be the one that turned hard when I removed the old mb. Anyway...mb is in...now to hook up the wires...then off to take that relaxing bath so I can work up the nerve to see if it will post. LOL

You should be fine Abby. Those mounting points on the motherboard are all grounding points, to ground the motherboard (properly) to the case. It's not necessary to have all of them connected. Biggest problem would be if you've got an unsupported spot right under the RAM slots or PCI slots where you'd be pushing a card down forcefully, and the board would flex under it, possibly causing it to crack if you got too energetic. Second problem, which is sounds like you do NOT have, is to have one of those standoffs improperly positioned so that it hits a live spot on the motherboard, instead of one of those grounding points. That could short out the motherboard and ruin it. You've been diligent about positioning, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Glad I could be of assistance!!:) Kitchen utensils are good for way more than cooking!!!! Ask my wife...she is always yelling at me because the butterknifes magically dissappear!!

I don't know what she is talking about!!

The morning run went good!! I am still in the training program right now so I am more of ride along/bus monitor status right now...so basically I ride on other driver's routes when they are having trouble with the kids, and so I can get the hours...which equals pay!!!! It seems as though the junior high kids around here are the devils children, which is who I had to monitor this morning, but they were still asleep when they got on the bus so it wasn't bad at all this morning!! But we'll see what happens this evening when they are all ready to get out of there!!!! LOL

LoL! Yep, I thought that would be the next bugbear. I often have trouble seeing what's what on those pins, myself. I've held off on getting glasses a.t.m., until I get all the tests done at the hospital text month. Ugh!, gittin' old sux! :(

Well, ya should be ready for launch soon. Then we'll see wether it'll be tears of joy, or the other kind, oy! The worst part is over, at least. Gigabyte mainboards aren't too bad to set up. ;)

Would be nice if the computer industry would agree on a standard for that set and simply provide a plug from case to mobo, like power connectors etc. They all do about the same things.

BTW, for Abby: If any of the lights don't light up, and the plug is on the right pins, turn the plug around 180 degrees. Most of them are polarity sensitive, and most are not clear as to positive and negative. Keep the tweezers handy.

Oh jeez...I just called her on the phone and asked if she's got it up and running; she told me it's all connected, but she hasn't powered it up yet. She said she's been sittiing in my chair staring at it for over an hour, I guess bonding with it before she fires it up :D

    * grumble grumble* I'll get to it, really I will:D...been up since a little after 3, my back is KILLING me which is a distraction...that and other than tweaking here and there in the BIOS I'm admittedly intimated by setting it up but will back it up of course first just in case. That, and if it doesn't post when I hit the power button I still have to decide if I'm gonna throw a temper tantrum or just throw the puter out in the marsh..think I'll flip a coin.;):D

Well...just boils down to my lack of confidence me thinks.

At the end of the day I don't know why you guys were all so worried about this;):p...as soon as I hit the power button it fired right up..backed up the BIOS, got it all set up and it's almost done formatting now. Got one fan in backward but no big...haven't closed the case up yet so I'll flip that around later. Everything seems to be working as it should. System has been up and running since my last post...temp is holding steady at 36.:D
