Hi super geeks i have just had the biggest meltdown ever and i don't know what caused it???

this is not a plea for help (it's too late for that).

on Sunday i was researching some stuff for my father in law about a dutch orchestra and while surfing around i happened to click the stumbleupon logo on the toolbar i thought nothing of it at the time i went for a cup of coffee intending to clear it on return, when i came back my hard disk was going at full speed and i thought it was just auto updating until i got the screen saver off and saw my antivirus going crazy loading virus and Trojan warnings (about 12) they varied from Win32 darkagain to assorted Trojans and spy ware, i had no idea what was going on so tried to exit the Internet but the computer had a mind of it's own i tried Task manager and it just showed stumbleupon running but the CPU was at 100% so i did the only thing i could and pulled the power,i sat there a while wondering what had just happened after about 10min i started up again and it started to load but only got as far as the logo then it just hung as if looking for the OS i tried reboot at least 6 times but always the same result.

i telephoned my son in law in England (he's a geek) and for an hour we tried to get the system running in the end i said OK i will reformat as i have everything on my external disk (it was connected during the crash) everything was good i got the OS up and running got the wifi back back and went to my external disk the moment i switched it on the whole process started again so my backup is also corrupt now i have a bit of luck that all my really important stuff is backed up to DVD and i have no intention of putting those in until i have everything back in order the biggest heart break is i have lost a lot of my toys they were all on the External disk, i have changed my anti virus to NOD 32 as my other (F_SECURE) the subscription is due next week.

I will not say that stumbleupon was the culprit but it is strange that all this happened while it was running.

i have never heard of a crash like this before and hope it never happens to me again i realise the obvious question is have i been visiting naughty sites well the answer is not knowingly.

as i say it's too late for help but it is a heads up.:cry:cry:cry:cry

    Boy, what a headsup. :major

    Wikipedia entry, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StumbleUpon.

No mention of nasties there, though.

    From the Wiki entry:
On May 30th, 2007, eBay announced the acquisition of StumbleUpon for US$75 million.

The only frightening thing I have had on SU is a few times instead of going to the next page my Download File To ???? has popped up. I always hit cancel.
Since the first one I have not ever hit the next Stumble without seeing what is coming.

As i have said i can not guarantee that the problem came from SU but i do not have any other places to look.

the most frightening thing was once it had started i could not escape, everything now is getting back to normal i just need to find all my toys again.

i am taking my external disk to the local repair to see if anything can be salvaged as i do not have the know how to access it without getting all the problems that sit in there.confusedconfused
