Stupid Sound Problems

Hi, my girlfriend just reformatted her computer with windows 98 SE and ever since her sound totally screws up. Sometimes it works for a bit then her computer freezes, sometimes she'll get an error saying the device is already in use. Anywho, if somebody could sort of walk me through what to do step by step that would be super swell. According to Everest her motherboard is PCChips M766LMRT and she has a C-Media CMI8738/C3DX Audio Device listed under audio adapter. I think she just needs new drivers, but I really don't know where to begin as nothing I've done seems to correct the problem. Thanks!
