The game runs fine on my system, but whenever someone speaks their voice stutters, and the game seems to skip for a quick second. What could be causing a problem like this?

    Mobility Radeon 9700
    1 gb of ram
    AMD 64 3200+
    Windows XP Home Edition
    Realtek AC 97 sound

What do you have the sound setting on? Try turning the audio properties down to lower levels. How's the game? I'll be watching this week's sales adds for a deal somewhere, just can't bring myself to pay $50 for a game.

I honestly can't buy a game for $50 since I'll play and play until I'm finished with it between a week to a month depending on the game. I usually wait until the price has gone down which I know is unfortunate for the manufacturers. I think the most I spent on a brand new game was about $30 or $35. That one was when I bought Return to Castle Wolfenstein for PC when it was on sale. My second place game was Metroid Prime 2 Echos. :)

Anyway, I am very eager to purchase Quake 4 since I loved the other games of the series. Or is it that I just enjoy playing FPS? I think it's the latter. ;)

The funny thing is Quake 4 doesn't give an option to disable certain sound features. I think it is time for me to get an external sound card like the one Creative offers. Onboard sound causes too many problems.

I just got an Audigy 2 NX External for my laptop, and now the game won't even boot up. Plus, I get this distorted noise while playing other games. I know it is probably because I can't disable my onboard sound in my crappy BIOS, but I did disable it in Device Manager. Does anybody know how I can disable this onboard sound?

disabling it throught the device manager is as good as bios, now you need to completly remove all the old drivers and remove the sound blaster drivers and do a clean install.

Do a clean install of the drivers or windows?

I just tried doing the clean install and now it doesn't work at all. I get error messages related to the drivers and the sound card on startup. Plus my onboard sound is now under the category of other devices so I just disabled it.

you HAVE TO have onboard sound disabled, you remove all the drivers from the onboard and from the soundblaster, then you just install SB2 drivers, followed by the online update.

I returned the crappy sound card and got a better one the Audigy 2 ZS Notebook. My sound works fine now. Apparently Creative couldn't even help troubleshoot my problem with the NX when I called them. This gave me the signal that this external sound card BLOWS. Thanks for the help anyways. Quake 4 plays great now.
