Sudden reboot followed by 'recovered from a serious error' message

My laptop has the tendency to shut down and reboot on its own. On rebooting a 'the system has recovered from a serious error'- message is displayed. Sometimes it happens when I am using the system, other times it happens when no programme is running. Last night the system rebooted about 15 times continuously before I managed to interfere and manually shut down. The laptop is about 4 years old, I replaced the hard drive last summer. I have not installed any new hardware recently. The laptop does get quite hot, and I have read here that this could be the cause. I'd like to know if this problem is worth fixing or should I be looking to buy a new laptop? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Heat would cause a complete shut down rather than a reboot as you are getting.
It's probably a good idea to turn off "automatic reboot" on errors. This way, you will get a BSOD, with an error code and words. That helps to pinpoint what the problem might be: hardware, driver, software.
    1. Right click My Computer.
    2. Choose Properties.
    3. Click the Advanced tab from the systems properties page.
    4. In the Startup and Recovery portion choose Settings.
    5. Under system failure remove the checkmark next to Automatically restart.
    6. Click Ok twice.
