    Hi,

    I have a Dell Dimension 8300 desktop.

    All of a sudden this evening my computer does not see movies (DVDs) in neither drive D: nor E. Drive D is my default drive. Previous to this, whenever a movie was inserted into the drive, the movie would start playing automatically.

    Now when a movie is placed in the drive, the drive runs awhile but nothing happens.
    We have also tried using the "Dell Media Experience" or "Power DVD" programs on my machine to run the movies, but that does not work either. It keeps saying it cannot find the disk in the drive or there is no disk is drive D or E.

    This only happens with movies. When I start up one of my games (which is on DVD), it will run as normal.

    What is going on here and how do I fix it?

    Thank you for any help you can offer me. :)

    Both D and E are cd/dvd drives? Have you gone to device manager and checked the properties of each?
    Did you try a system restore?
    What, if anything, have you installed prior to the problem?

    I believe I have fixed my problem.

    Nothing new was installed before my problem hit.

    I went to the device manager for my drive and looked at the properties. For some reason or other, the properties for playing movies were not right. I set it up to play movies again in properties, put a movie in, and the movie played.

    Now it is working. I don't know what happened to screw up the settings in the properties for the drive, but it's fixed now.

    Thank you, Tim, for your suggestions.

    HI

    The dimesion 8300 4400-E510-E310-B110 series of Dell have a know issue....If you are not using the drive especially dvd drive the drive reads the disc inserted but it wont display any msg on the screen.This happens when you are using that drive after quite long time jut follow these steps & see your drive will work fine..

    If that doesn't works out just tr to reset teh IDE connector(data cable grey ribbon ide cable by opening the chassis)

    what you can do is just go in registry & delete the upper & lower filters & no install class key in Local machine;

    1> Start . run> regedit> click on plus sign near HKEY LOCAL MACHINE
    2> Click on system>CurrentControllSet>Control>Class>{4DE36E965-E325-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    & delete REg_SZ of lower & upper filters No Install class

    After you do that go in device manager click on plus sing near IDE/ATA ATAPI CONTROLLERS..you will see..secondary IDE channel..Just right click & uninstall that & reboot the pc....

    This works....

    Thanks & Let me know regarding this...

    Da@# tried it. But I'm guessing that the drive is done for. It's only 3 yrs old with light to moderate use. Last time I buy a package unit. I'll build my next one thinking about build ing a pend D 805 OC'er with a asrock mobo. Speaking of mobos anyone know if I can change the mobo in my Dell 8300 so I can OC? If so what mobo from budget to High end? Sorry for the hijack.

    Most Dells are propriatary, and the conector used to connect the switches and light in the front is Dell specific. Another issue may be the powersupply. Many MFG's use propriatary powersupplys, so that may need to be changed. there is a site out there about propriatary power supplies on dells, If you plug a non standard power supply into some dell boards it will cook. I don't know if the opisit is true. You may just want to buy a faster processor and save some cash and build your next rig. I love Dell, but when I want blistering speed for something I'm working on, I build my own. That way when it breaks I only have myself to complain about.

    Hi,

    I tried to do what you suggested but there is no such registry key beginning with 4DE in my machine. My key reads:
    {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Is that the one you mean? Also, I am not exactly sure what I delete there.

    I just want to be sure I am doing this correctly.

    Thank you for your help. :)
