I'm don't know what is wrong with my system but it suddenly started slowing down and when I am working with Gimp it freezes. I have noticed in the task manager that my amount of free physical memory gets down to zero very quickly. When I boot my computer there are two programs that come up, vaio update and Iobit SmartDefrag. I close them and they just open again. This happens about 3 times before they stay closed. I haven't even found Iobit in the startup menu.

    I have completed the following:

Basic computer maintenance everyone should do ~ including deleting some programs that I do use on a regular basis.

READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

    Vista Cleaning Procedure

My computer is still running very slowly...something is clearly wrong.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Look for Iobit in the C:\Programs
If you find it, open it and see if there is a setting to run a scan at startup. If so, say no. Look to see if there is a scan schedule set up and change it from auto to manual.

Your choice about Vaio updates. If it were my computer, I'd turn it off. I like to get my own updates rather than have things downloading and updating behind my back. If something breaks, then I can pretty well pinpoint what the softwre problem might be.

If you can't find Iobit in the Programs listing (not the Start menu/programs which is a different location), then download something that keeps track of startup things: WinPatrol free version http://www.winpatrol.com/
I was trying to see if it is compatible with Vista - don't install it until someone says it is.

Yes, it works in Vista http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html

When your computer is running slow, which processes are using the most CPU? Which processes are using a lot of memory?
This can be checked through the task manager.

Ok, I have turned off Vaio updates and Iobit...neither of them are starting on their own anymore.

Looking at the task manager right now. System Idle Process is using the most CPU...in the 90's, followed by taskmgr.exe.

As far as memory...there are so many different types of memory that I am not sure which one I should be looking at. Which one do you mean?
