Just wondering what MG might suggest for System Restore disk
    usage setting in Win XP.

At the lowest setting of 1% on my machine that is 2010MB,
and at 3% it is 3820MB. Setting at 2% is not available.
    (148GB total space; 117GB free)

I rarely use it although occasionally it is a lifesaver.
When needed, a restore point from the last two or three days
is usually what I need, so a large number of restore points is
    generally not necessary.

I do not know how much disk space is needed for each restore point.

Disk defragmenting takes a good deal longer with larger disk
    usage settings.

    I'm thinking 2010MB is sufficient.

    Suggestions?
    Thanks.

There is no spyware here. No problem or infection.

This is simply an operating system setting for System Restore resources.

I use CCleaner (v2.25.1025) regularly, but I don't recall seeing anything about removing or deleting system restore points.

When the system restore disk space usage slider setting is lowered,
the disk space used for older restore points is released.

    @ DomLuc
Thanks for the tip about CCleaner 'Tools' and restore points.
The only thing I've used there is the Startup tool, as a quick reference.

Maybe my comments about disk defrag and restore points was misleading.
A couple of days ago, when running MyDefrag, I noticed that it was spending
a great deal of time moving data related to system restore. I terminated the process before completion and checked the system restore settings and found that it had been reset to the maximum position. I recall seeing that once before, but I never manually set it to that point. After resetting the disk usage to a much lower level, the defrag issue was resolved.

What I was really looking for is how much 'history' some people like to have available for system restore.

unless you have a separate program that will delete all restore points except the most current (either TuneUp Utilities or jv16 Power Tools will do this; i forget which) the only way to clean up all those restore points is to toggle System Restore. turn off system restore, restart your pc, then turn system restore back on.

there's a trial for both the above programs, but you don't get much functionality unless you purchase. if you don't know what you're doing, stay away from using all the Registry "fixers" in either program (or any other program for that matter). you'll do WAY more damage to your system with those than just leaving your registry alone.

i have used the system restore point cleaner in which ever one has it, with no ill effects, but toggling your system restore does just as good, for free.

personally, mine's set pretty low to save disc space and i haven't used a restore point in quite awhile. as long as you keep your security software up to date & your system clean and defragged, and don't install stuff willy nilly, you should be fine with a lower setting. all depends on how much room you want to give to it.

    Thanks Cake.
I was already aware of the Off/Restart/On approach, but I'm not interested in doing that.

Also, as DomLuc pointed out, CCleaner provides a means of selectively removing restore points.

I had a situation earlier this week where I had uninstalled Avira AntiVir with Revo uninstaller and something went afoul. When I tried to install Avast!, it refused because it detected Avira as being installed. When I tried to re-install Avira, (so that I could remove it through Add/Remove Programs), it would not work properly. I tried using the daily ERUNT registry backup, but that also failed. System Restore got me back to a point where I could redo the process, through Add/Remove Programs, which fixed the problem.

I see you are in the Rockies, so I guess I'm two or three hours ahead of you (NC).
Think I'll call it a night, or day, or something ;)

My opinion is that 1% is enough for system restore (2010MB). I have mine set to 3%, but my drive is only 80GIG.
