I am on a personal computer using cable, I want to help an (older) person with their computer, but am going nuts not being able to view what they are seeing. They are in another state. We are not on any networks or servers other than personal. What can you suggest (free would be great) to help me better help an elderly person solving computer issues? This is even just for signing things up, removing spyware, etc. I just need to see what they are viewing on their desktop.

WebEx is a fantastic product. It's not free but you could download a free 30 day trial. You can share the desktop and chat to each other at the same time.

Thank all of you for your replies. I downloaded the TeamViewer one (was first) and found it worked really great! Simple to use and goes right through firewalls. I will keep the other suggestions close just in case.

Just to offer another option.... Windows XP has remote desktop support built-in via Windows Messenger. It works fine and is fairly easy to set up, and requires no 3rd party apps. More info available at this link. The article shows different ways to access remote assistance, but I've found using the Windows Messenger method the easiest.

I hope this helps (someone, someday ;) ).
Glad to hear all is well.

dlb, just out of curiosity, with the WinXP remote desktop, doesnt the screen black out on the one beeing remotely accessed? Team Viewer lets you see what the other person is doing. Please correct me if I am confrused on that. I tend to get confrused.:-D

A friend and I have been trying to set this up, using Windows Live Messenger; I'm using XP - she's on Vista... research shows that she might need the " RendezvousApplication object ".... Any clues as to what/where to get what's needed?

    Tnx,
    dr.m
