I just inherited a very old Viglen computer that has all of 16MB of RAM. The downloads from the modem on what seems to be the equally old Pentium processor are taking forever as well with my dial-up. (It has a WIN95 program on it, by the way.)

My question is this, what do I look for when I search my local computer fair? I'm trying to get a hold of the booklet that came with it so I can show them what I have, but without that book, how do I make sure I get something that will be compatible?

Does anyone know off hand what information I need to bring with me, and if I can find it on the computer itself, and if you already know of some faster modem types and RAM expansions compatible with old old OLD computers?

    Thanks in advance.

Hi :) The problem is whatever you spend for the parts will be about the same price as buying a used computer that will be twice as fast as you can ever make it,unfortunetly the only use for old computers like that is for very basic text documents, the internet with all the new graphical tweaks accustomed to the spread of broadband will kill the experience of using it,in my honest humble opinion I think you should consider buying a used computer,I think it will give you the most pleasure and just as important be most cost effective

If you still wish to upgrade we may be able to find out what you have and what you can put in there its just a case of finding a component ID tool that supports win 95

    :(

Thank you for your advice and honesty. I have so little money that when I was given this computer I thought I might be able to find some components cheap enough for my needs at the computer fair, so for me it's worth trying to find what I can, if I can, and if the price is right.

For the moment, I'd really appreciate any information you might be able to give me to help my search.

    Thanks, Maggie

I don't seem to see a link on your post to use. Am I not looking in the right place?

My friend was able to find all of the paper on this Viglen. Here goes:

Model: CON ATX DESKTOP PCI P5/133
    CPU : Pentium 133MHz
Math Co-Pro: 80x87 present No Weitek
    BIOS: AMI, Daate 07/02/96
    Memory: Base 640, Shadow 384, Ext 15360
    Floppy 1: 1.44M
    Floppy 2: None
    Hard Disk 0: Size 1620 Type 1 Cyl 823 Hds 64 Sct 63
    Display: VGA BIOS Cirrus
    Com 1 : 3F8h
    Lpt 1: 378h
    OS Version: MS-DOS Version 4.00
    Applications: Windows 95
    Test Date: 11/30/96

    So, back to my main questions;

Can I acquire componants like a faster modem, and a faster processor card, or whatever I might need to spunk this machine up?

What exactly am I looking for?

And lastly... I'm having a lot of trouble finding an anti-virus program and a firewall that works with such an old computer with WIN 95. If you know of any that FOR SURE are compatible, and hopefully a free download, I'd be most grateful.

Maggie I'm really out of my depth on this one, thats one old comp :) ,IMHO t it will not be worth upgrading at all,if you do manage to find any parts above the current spec that fit it they will cost you as much as a used computer with 10x the performance :(

Thanks for your honesty, Rikky. I'd rather know now than spend a load of time and energy. I'll just deal with it as it is.
