I have Java Sun Platform 2 which installed onto my PC. What the heck is it? Should I take it off? Will this mess up my Java settings if I rmeove it?

    Hi Cl@re :)
No the best practice is to keep it up to date by using the built in updater and then removing the old version via the control panel in add/remove program's section

    Regards :)

I was trying last night to get my update. It was taking over 5 hours and I finally had to stop it by going offline. I only connect at 28.8.
I looked this morning for the automatic update? I can't find it.
This morning, I am getting an update from windows, so won't be able to do this one till later.

    Thanks.
    Gal
I am running the JRE.x updating to Update 6

Appreciate the news regarding the update to further block hackers but I never understood what SunJava is? This is the application I had on my Dell XPS....Java Runtime Vendor: Sun Microsystems Inc.
Java Runtime Version 1.5.0_01 You do NOT have the latest version of Java.
The latest version of Java software = Version 5.0 Update 6. Nick, is clear terms, what does it do for the ordinary home user?

  13. NICK ADSL UK

NICK ADSL UK MajorGeeks Forum Administrator Staff Member

    Hi m79vest36 :)
The sun Java is a technology which allows certain types of programs, called Java applications or Java applets, to run on Windows-based computers. You may need on certain web pages for example such as this one to run a speed test
    http://www.adslguide.org.uk/
Or you may find Java applets that start automatically and may perform a variety of functions, ranging from simple loan calculators or stock quote tickers to more complex functionality for the services the Web site provides.
If you don't surf on these types of web pages then you can turn it off and see how you get on. Should you find yourself on a web page that needs java a pop up will normally appear and then you can turn it back on. I hope you find this answer adequate

    Regards

    Hi Ron :)
In the control panel you should see the java console icon all you have to do is right click it open. To get to the control panel just click on start / control panel and you are there

I have a Java Plug-in Icon which when I try to open gives me a window which says that it cannot find the registry key specified:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Plug-in\1.4.2

What do I need to do?

OK. I did the download but when I try to install it, I get the Java Installer window and it looks like it is installing but nothing happens. Got any idea what the problem might be?

    Hi Ron :)
Could you give this beta build a try and let me know if this will install for you. The main build which you have downloaded has not installed in some cases i have been told and this beta build should correct that fault

Still no go. No Java Web start anywhere, though. Is that a problem?

It certainly is a problem and we will need to work out as to why this installation has not installed. Can you please take a look in the add/remove program's to see if it is in there and come back to me
    thanks :)

Many thanks Draklaa for providing the screen shot. Well as you have two installation's that could be the cause of your problem so the best thing is to remove both version's and then reboot the computer and then reinstall the beta again
When you have done that you will find the sun java icon in the control panel. Let me know how this goes
    thanks

Done and reinstalled. The Java icon was in the system try for about a minute, then, when I tried a Java site, it didn't work and the icon went away. I rebooted and the icon isn't coming back and sites still don't work.

Also in the control panel on clicking on the java icon you have this screen shot exactly as on your own version on the java App runtime settings

I am having the exact same problem as Draklaa. In Tools, Internet Options, Advanced it is checked next to Sun Java Use JRE 1.50_06 for <applet> requires restart. Restart has no affect. Icon also comes and goes. I uninstalled through add and remove programs everything that said Java except JRE 1.50_06 after downloading Sun Java. I use AVG, AD-aware, Spybot, and SpywareBlaster with XP home edition on an AMD Sempron 2500 machine.

Yes, that is what mine shows.

No, Norton went away a few days ago, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled Java since then. And I didn't have Norton Internet Security, I had Norton AntiVirus 2003.

I would disable any Ad Blocking features you might have running and see if that helps.

If not, run the Rnav2003.exe removal utility here, http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3077 see if that solves it. Here is a link from Symantec if you need it. http://service1.symantec.com/support/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606

    Hi Parker Nite Fly :)
Well at this time i have no product knowledge on this beta build from not installing. Now there is a build which has always worked in which i would like you to try and that is this build. Remember to uninstall all previous version's and reboot prior to reinstalling

    http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/1.4.2_08/index.html

  41. Draklaa

Uninstalled the beta version and installed that last link you posted. Java icon now pops into the system tray if I pull up the Sun Java Console and stays there until I close my browser, but no Java sites are working still.

Also, I can't reinstall Microsoft's VM since I have SP2, so if I can't get this working I am basically screwed.

I didn't mean to interfere in your thread, just wanted to mention some issues that might cause a problem. :)

Tried using the link provided to the older version but I couldn't connect to the server. So I uninstalled Sun Java, rebooted, and reinstalled the latest and greatest (not the beta version). Everything seems to be working at the moment. Went to several sites to check and Java worked on every page. Must not have like me deleting the old versions after installing the new? Anyway thanks for the help.

Good Luck Draklaa getting this sorted out on your system! Try uninstalling all Java, rebooting, then reinstall.
