i had a spyware issue. one of the tips for preventing them included getting rid of MS Java Virtual Machine and downloading Sun Java. ok...did that. i've noticed that a lot of the websites i frequently go to look different now.
(no big deal, just being whiny i guess ;) ) anyway...to the problem...

when i go to play games (on Uproar, specifically) i can play games, but i can't chat. i get a blank gray box with a red X in it. i tried this solution but it didn't help. im a Family Feud junkie...i've gotta have my chat! hopefully someone can help (if not blame it on Kodo :D )

    Computer Specifics:

    Operating System Microsoft Windows ME
    OS Service Pack None
    Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106 (IE 6.0 SP1)

CPU Type Intel Pentium IIIE, 733 MHz (5.5 x 133)
    Motherboard Name Compaq Compaq PC
    Motherboard Chipset Intel Whitney i810E
System Memory 128 MB (PC100 SDRAM)
    BIOS Type Compaq (08/25/00)

hopefully this isn't some really simple issue that the solution will make me feel like an idiot, but if it is, i'm sure everyone will let me know pretty quick. ;)

oh...and if the solution involves re-installing MS Java Virtual Machine...that will be alright too. ;)

Have you tried adding your sites you play these games on to your safe zone? I have windows xp and had an aweful time figureing out how to get that chat box fixed, what I did and you may want to try it is: Open IE under tool, Internet options, Security, Safe Zones, sites, add the sites there. You may have to unchec the lil box before it will let you add them here. Then recheck that box. Also, look under advanced tap and make sure that sun java has a check mark by it. Like I said this worked on XP, so might work for you also.

thanks for the suggestion Lady, i wish it was the answer to my problem. that was a problem for me on my other computer, but it's not the solution in this situation. i know just enough to be stumped...and not enough to fix it.

    *sigh*

this is the info from the Java Console when i try to access the chat that goes with the games at uproar:

Frustration Level: 7 (smiling through gritted teeth)

I've tried solutions to similar problems that I found in the MG Archives, with no luck. (Yes, the box is checked -Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, Java etc...) I've updated my..ummm...objects? (Active X etc..). I've sent a request to Uproar Support...but that could take weeks.

I assume that the lack of replies here means one of three things, either nobody has a clue what I'm talking about, I've posted my question in the wrong area of the forums, or nobody gives a rats tail that I can't chat. (I'm a woman! I HAVE to talk! (telephone conversations, bathroom gossip, SMS, IM and chat are a girls best friend! :) )

If nobody has any idea...then maybe SOMEONE could point me somewhere that I might find help.

    sighlentex,

Don't give up just yet. When did you notice the blank gray box with a red X in it, after removing spyware, or after installing Sun Java? What is supposed to be in the box, text only?

You mentioned IM and chat, are they working okay, any delay or difficulty sending text messages?

Also, the websites you frequently go to, how do they look different?

    Steve

The blank grey box with a red X is supposed to be text only-just chat. (When I play Family Feud there is a circle to click to "Chat", it brings up a pop-up that has the chat area in it. It's not a pop-up blocker issue, I've been chatting since I installed AdAware with no problems.) The problems with the chat started after I uninstalled MS Java VM and installed Sun Java.

The way things look different is going to sound really abstract, but can only be described as: the "boxes" are wider, the fonts look bigger, and things seem to "scroll" differently (i see tracers ).

thanks for your help...you saved me from the ultimate act of desperation: calling my ex for help. :D

thanks, Matacumbie! the first article didn't help...but the second one might be the solution to everything. (i'm downloading it now)

i can't run both Sun Java and MS Java VM right?

just for the record i wouldn't have deleted MS Java (even though it was suggested)...but a power outage in our area did something to the pc, and Java no longer worked. i saw it as a good time to try Sun, and i've been really disappointed.

    Thanks again! :)

i can't have MS and Sun java at the same time, right?

Sorry sighlentex, scroll down that page and it shows how to switch back and forth. I was busy and forgot to include that. ;)

spit! why did i think it might be easy to re-install MSJVM? i downloaded msjav86.exe...and thought i had installed MSJVM. i got a popup that said "Microsoft VM:The installation is complete." i didn't get anything telling me to reboot, but i did anyway. then i tried to go into Tools/Advanced and then choose MSJVM for my default java...and it WASN'T THERE!

is this the end of the world??? oh the horror!!

what now? (pass the Kleenex) *sniff*

Steps to install the Microsoft Virtual Machine:

    1. Download the file and save it to your harddrive.

    2. Once the file is on your harddrive, execute it and thus load the Virtual Machine.

    3. As the file begins execution, answer Yes to the License Agreement question and then once complete, re-boot your PC.

    4. Once the PC is re-booted you should be set to go.

    Does this help?

no help there. i even went and re-downloaded the file thinking just maybe i had gotten a corrupted file or something , but i still don't have MSJVM (as far as i know).

i did a Search of the machine for the word "java" and found several files, but the 2 .exe's i found were java.exe and javaw.exe. i clicked on the two of them thinking they might be something important...but java.exe just brought up a Dos window, scrolled and dropped and javaw.exe did nothing.

what am i missing here? i've obviously overlooked something, or missed a step?

thanks for all your help Steve,
    Stephanie

If you want to check Java installation, in Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab, scroll about half way down and you will see what is installed and enabled under the heading/s Java (Sun) and/or Micro$$oft VM.

Thanks Insomniac...i did know that much...i just couldn't figure out how to put MSJVM back on. i finally got an answer from someone...the key to getting MSJVM back on was deleting Sun Java first. i've got MSJVM re-installed and all my java worries are history!! :)

and a funny thing i've gotta admit...in the middle of all this Uproar went through some sort of uprgrade, thus the pages looking "different" like i said. ;)

thanks for all ya'lls help and suggestions.

    That's weird.

You don't normally need to remove Sun Java to install Virtual Machine.

At least on my machine I didn't.

I have both installed and don't have any problems.

Anyway, the main thing is that it's fixed.

it's possible now that i've gotten MSJVM re-installed that i could go back and re-install Sun...but i can't think of any reason why i need both. are there any instances where i would prefer to use Sun over MS?

I only have both because I'm lazy and couldn't be bothered removing one.

Also, the adage, "if it ain't broke don't fix it" applies. :)

There are more security breaches with Micro$$oft Virtual Machine, and some programs require Sun Java present or they won't install. (LimeWire Pro for example).

Most of the experienced members here suggest using Sun Java only.

It's really up to you if you only run one or both.

i tried Sun Java following a suggestion in the Spyware area of the forums, i don't think i would have ever even thought of it...to me java just 'is'...it's like air...i don't know what it's made out of but it seems alright to me. (oh yes, i'm a computer genius you see? )

now that i've got things back to normal, i'm not gonna go trying any of that new fandangled technology. lol ;) well...not on that computer anyway.

    thanks for the info. :)
