Yo, I got a Laptop "sager"

its a pen4 3.6 got a stick of 512, and a nice crappy radeon 9000 WOOOT but its a pretty nice PC for a laptop, runz great.

anyhow i picked up Ut2004 at a freinds house and couldn't put it down, so now i'm playin and i can see maybe a half secound delay in fireing just hardly any lag, but eought to piss me off lol, my question is if anyone has any tips or sites i could take a look at and maybe i can set and switch some stuff around and it will run even better?

i went to page 8 lookin for a UT2004 post but i couldn't find one, so if this has been posted B4 sorry, i tried to find one

First things I would do would be to disable the charachter skin pre-chaching and take out the speech recognition. That ought to free up some resources for you. Beyond that, I'd lower the level of detail settings small increments at a time until you're getting the response you want. Half second lag times like that should only come from network lag, so pay attention to the pings of the servers you join ;)

you can also get some drivers, like the omega drivers, that run on Mobility Raedon cards. But you can't get them from ATI. >>.<< I do know the omega drivers work with the Mobility Raedon 9000, because I am using them right now.

No, it's under the settings menu. I think it's called, "pre-loading of player skins". Or it could be "texture pre-caching". I think it's the first one though.

Thanks W Earp, I saw that and thought that might be it but it seems like disabling it would only speed up load time, not increase FPS. I'm I wrong about that?

It does both to a degree. It greatly cuts down on load time, and as the map loads, and the server is relaying info on what player models are being loaded, your machine is caching those textures as the map loads. This is where disabling Speech Recognition comes in.... if you don't use it, then you really don't need it. It takes up a lot of CPU time and resides in system memory, soaking up potential frames per second.

Is speech recognition when people type and the voice says what they type? And Iceman, how does disabling pre-caching increase FPS? Just curious and trying to learn.
    Thanks

No, its where you talk into the mic and bots do what you tell them to. But they don't, and it sucks :p

I've tried talking with an americain accent (hey, it works with most speech recognition software I've used!) and ive tried speaking Very Clearly Metaphorically Capitalising Every Word And Pronouncing Them Correctly, but it didnt work either, lol.

Speech recognition is where you can issue commands to the bots by speaking into a microphone. And yes, when the computer plays back the sounds of the text that people type in, is Speech Recognition too. Cutting that out will free up some memory for you.

Disabling precaching helps you FPS in the way that it's not using that much system memory that the game can otherwise use to display things faster. Making sure your drivers are all up to date can give you a marginal performance gain, too.

True dat... I've seen a 0.4 FPS increase going from 44.03 drivers to 56.73 drivers using an nVidia card :D

LOL I got a 6fps gain from going to DirectX 9.0c... and the Catalyst 4.7's are bombastic. I even got a frames increase in CoH :D

I have a gig of Ram and according to Cacheman I'm never using over 800k. Would disabling those help? It's hard to test with identicle conditions because there are SO many variables in that game.
    Thanks you 2
