Supplier questions

I am looking for a new system.

I can get a beige Compaq at staples for $329 or build a Tiger Direct for $396....

Where else do you suggest I look for a base no frills system (AMD or Intel does not matter) 512 memory, DVD burner and USB/Sound? Monitor is not really important as I have a 19 and a 20 inch... color is not real critical either. One monitor is white, other black.

I don't buy anything from TigerDirect on principal. If you can live with what's in the box, then go with the Compaq or an HP (build it yourself model) from a big box store. Upgrading, adding to or changing hardware in systems from outfits like Compaq, HP, etc. can be problematic. So if you think you will be into upgrading or changing hardware within the next year, build it yourself from standard parts. Much easier to upgrade or modify than the pre-packaged units.

Have bought lots of stuff from Tigerdirect and never had any problems and the prices are always very competitive.

Give us actual examples of bad service,etc. please, I would like to know!!!!

since the box is for my wife, I bought the beige box at staples. I have 14 days to decide if this was the best I could do....

Tiger Direct has a poor reputation for years (just ezxacerbated by their notorious foot-dragging on rebates) and recently they foisted the Ultra X-Connect onto an unsuspecting public - which has earned the tag, "Crap that Glows". Go and try to find out the RMA policy on Ultra products (I don't think you will find it in writing anywhere - you will have to call to hear it, and when you hear it (unless they have recently changed it) your jaw will drop) - what kind of company has a policy like that?

In case anyone was unaware:
TigerDirect, Ultra Products, Global (currently in legal troubles), Infotel, Systemax and probably others are for all practical purposes the same company.
