Well, with your help, I finally completed my order for a new Dell 5150. As with the computer, I would like your suggestions for battery backup and surge protection. I can find them from 350VA to 1500VA. Brand and size??

I'm partial to APC. I currently have a BX1200-CN ( Canadian Model ). It has 2 12-volt batteries and keeps my LCD display and dual video card SLI rig surfing for a reported 41 minutes - I actually timed it at 39 minutes 16 seconds before automatic shutdown began on my computer. It takes about 8 hours to recover from a full discharge, wheras a 20 minute discharge only takes 2 hours to recover full charge. I've now set the software to shutdown after 20 minutes.

I'm also an APC fan. Their customer support is streets ahead of most suppliers.

You'll need to figure out what capacity you need. That will depend on what peripherals you need to protect/provide power for in the event of an outage. It will also depend on how much run time you need after the power goes out.

Pay a visit to APC's page at <http://apcc.com/tools/ups_selector/index.cfm>. That'll help you figure out what you need. In my experience, that page will give you a straightforward answer that you can hang your hat on if you can give it reliable data to work with.
