OK, not sure what soundcard I have, i think it's a 5.1 dolby compatible, in device manager it says CMI8738/ C3DX PCI Audio Device.
Does anyone know if I could get 5.1 surround sound speakers for this soundcard? The box says 4-CH. 6-CH. and on the back the box labled "L-8738-6C (L-Shape)" is ticked.
So will I need a new soundcard for surround sound speakers, is what I'm saying???!!!

everything i found said its a 6-channel sound card. so all you have to do is setup, your speakers according to the instructions for 6-channel.

oh, and when a product says satellite speakers, does it mean that there are no cables to connect the satellites and there are no cables needed, just to connect the main "box" to your soundcard?

usually *sorry all the time* they include basic hardware *material* to connect your speakers including cable from the soundcard to the amplifier *usually the subwoofer*.

check www.logitech.com or www.creative.com for 5.1 speaker kit

    hope that helps

ok sorry maybe i wasn't making myself clear!
i know there's a cable from subwoofer to soundcard.
    but!
can you get 5.1 speakers that have no cables from subwoofer to other speakers (satellites as they're called!)?????

i'm sure my friend down the road has satellites that have no cables to connect to the subwoofer and are like infra red or something!!!

great...but if you need advice, please start a new thread.

satellite just means they are small speakers that are away from the sub...think moons or "satellites" around a planet or "sub". they have wireless setups but they are pricey. a 5.1 system is 6 channel...5 speakers and 1 sub = 6 channels.

Ok with most setups, you have 3 minijack leads which you plug into your sound card and they go into the amp. The leads are stereo, meaning you have 6 channels going to the amp. That then gets distributed by the amp accordingly.

Creative 5.1 sets are all supposed to have cables included in the kit, however I bought one which lost the wires in transit for £20 cheaper, because I can make my own for about 5p a lead. Works great! :D

But satelites are just small speakers that "orbit" you, like acejones says, and wireless ones are annoying because they are battery/cable powered anyway, so even if you have a wireless setup then you will need to have them all plugged in anyway, OR you have to keep changing the batteries.

5.1 comprises of : Left, Center, Right, Rear Left, Rear Right, Sub. 5 is the number of satelites, the 1 is the number of non-satelite speakers (in this case just the sub).
