Last night my computer would not shut down by itself. I did not notice anything wrong except that. This morning, when I turned it on, I have an error pop up
    Svchost.exe Application error
0x745f2780 referenced memory at 0x000000 memory can not be read.
Another popup says Generic Host Process Win 32 Services and wants to send an error report.
I am running Windows XP Home /service pack 2
I cannot connect to the internet.
I went into safe mode, ran Adaware and Spybot.........They both found nothing,
I also ran EMCO Malware Destroyer and RemoveIt. They also found nothing.
I don't know what else to try, being I can't connect to the internet with it?
I am using my daughter's computer now.
    Thanks for any ideas.

After doing some googling, I am beginning to think my problem might not be malware related.
    http://nuranto.blogspot.com/2007/02/svchostexe-application-error.html

I am going to try the steps from this and see if it works out my problem.
I do know it was updating my windows last night.

This won't help me out. I am on dial up and cannot connect to the internet in safe mode. I did try a restore, but that didn't make a difference either,

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Could I maybe get this thread moved to Software to see if anyone else has had this problem or could help me?

I am at a loss of what to even try.

Turned on computer, exited out of the errors and is like computer is froze. Lets me click on start and click on something, but doesn't open anything up, Even a game.
    Thanks

I am not sure what you (admin) want to do with this thread.
    I have fixed the problem.
    It was not malware.
I booted into safe mode and turned off Automatic Windows Update.
    Click Start
    Right click My Computer
    Click on Properties
Go to Automatic Updates and unclick it.
    Then I rebooted.
    Computer seems ok now.

Maybe it could help someone else if they have this problem.

Sorry for the delay in answering. It has just been too busy in here lately!

Thanks Chas. I do have one more question, though. At this time, I still have my automatic updates turned off. Can I turn them back on, or should I just check for them myself?

If you want to turn automatic updates on without getting the error back, rename c:\windows\software distribution and c:\windows\system32\catroot2 in safe mode before enabling it. Fixes the SVCHOST issue with automatic updates about 90% of the time.

I had this exact problem and fixed it in a similar way. Right click my comp, properties, turn off auto updates, reboot, go to windows update and update manually. (I had 24!updates). reboot again and then turn auto updates back on. I believe the pest can come back so if it does repeat the process.

I think this may fix your problem, and you may be able to turn Automatic Updates back on: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

The description of the fix does not exactly match the description of your problem, but it fixes in fact a few problems with svchost and the Windows Installer.

P.S. installing the hotfix will take a Restore Point before the install, and requires a reboot to finish.
