svchost hogging ressources

  1. Hi guys,
I'm gona try and keep this short. Past couple of weeks my comp. been really slow after booting. Checking with task manager I saw it was svchost was hogging ressources 100%, this lasts about 5 to 6 minutes exactly. I've used Process Explorer but that hasn't help me much in finding the culprit. I scanned computer with multiple AV's, and used my usual cocktail of spyware removal goodies, but came up clean. I tried checking if I didn't maybe install a new program perhaps that was trying to updating, even reset my firewall (Kerio) just to make sure I didn't Deny access to a program by mistake, but nothing was blocked. I had downloaded BitDefender AV a couple of weeks ago to have an on demand scanner (I usually use free online scanners) so I uninstalled it, but that wasn't it. A couple of days ago I noticed that after resources came back to normal (6 minutes +/- of staring at a basically frozen computer, windows update popped up, so I figured I had a big update coming. When I opened it up, it pretty much seemed like a basic update (usually 4 or 5 updates ready) So I updated. Rebooted the computer. svchost starts up again. This time I noticed Avast was scanning something in the task bar, checked it out and it seemed to be Windows programs in C drive searching for updates. I stopped auto-updates and rebooted, now no more freezes. I tried setting it to search but don't download, download but don't install, but the problem is still there. Obviously this is a temporary fix, but I don't want updates deactivated like this. I doubt that this is normal because it just started a couple of weeks ago. I'm gona try some more searching this weekend and give you my findings, hope somebody might have other solutions to suggest.

    Catch you guys later. ;)

  2. Thanks for the reply zbd21,
Nothing seems to be out of the ordinary when I check services. I did ntice that RCPS has a lot of dependancies but that's it.

I wonder if a previous Windows Update put updating in overdrive (trying to make Windows "safer" perhaps) Could it be the that I never upgraded to IE7. I don't think so because I don't get the warnings anymore, even if I unlock it from previous available update ignore list.

  4. Hi guys,
Sorry for the delay, and thanks for your suggestions. I tried most of the above, but svchost is still a pest. however it seems to do it every second time the computer is turned on. Still last about 6 minutes, I had tried Process Explorer before, but it didn't help much. I'm about 97% sure windows is updating it's various programs, but I'm still checking for any suspicious activities on my comp. Thanks again everybody for your help.

windows updates are the cause, I am positive. Looking at lost of different forums this is a common problem and always starts after auto updates. I have turned mine off now and check and download weekly manually. no more problems

  6. Hi zbd21,
I know confused , I figured on doing that also, but thought it was wiser to let windows let me know about updates(Without installing them automatically) I'll wait it out because now it's more of an inconvenience than an actual problem.
